7.3 4r100 trans fluid question

Hello I'm new to the forum and got a question about transmission fluid changing.

my truck is a 1999 f250 7.3 with a 4r100 trans with 248,000 miles on it. the previous owner who was a family member owned it from 150,000 and up. I bought it from him with 240,000 on it. he had told me that he had never had the trans fluid changed/flushed. now I have heard stories of people flushing a high mileage trans and causing damage. I know there is a changing procedure that doesn't use a machine but my problem is that I don't know if there's synthetic or conventional fluid in it now. is it ok to mix the fluids or not? the truck shifts good but the fluid is turning a little darker in color and I know its past due for a change. I would like to get it changed before I go on a road trip next weekend. and also what do u guys recommend for a fluid? any info would be appreciated. thanks

Re: 7.3 4r100 trans fluid question

My truck has over 270k on it and the trans has never been flushed or anything. The fluid is still red and doesn't smell burnt at all.

wow that's awesome but I cant tell if it smells burnt or not ive been reading around and people are saying change the fluid and others say don't change and save for a new tranny (money I don't have) im not sure what to do. would changing fluid hurt it? I don't think it would.

Re: 7.3 4r100 trans fluid question

Use the procedure stated above. I used amsoil and noticed a big change. I've heard alot of good about schaeffers on hear but we had some problems with it at work in equipment(weren't transmissions) but it was the same fluid so I opted not to go with that.

Re: 7.3 4r100 trans fluid question

I use mobil 1 full syn. and Its been in there for 4 years now (90,000 miles) and its still as red as the day I put it in and shifts great and has 197,000 miles on it and counting. Power flushing (with a machine) is what causes problems because it loosens the sludge in corners and such thats been stuck there for years and it pluggs up your cooler and valve body whitch screws the tranny up eventually. Changing your fluid wont hurt a thing unless its flushed by a machine.
