Re: turbo upgrade

I'm loving my GT-38R from Diesel Innovations, I never used it on stock injectors, but it works awesome with my mini me's. I'm sure it would be just as good on the stockers though

Re: turbo upgrade

Yes they just bolt on. How much depends on where you buy it. List price is around 1800, most vendors will sell for a bit under that. It's a very tough little turbo and will take a lot of abuse. Great small turbo for a compound setup as well.

Re: turbo upgrade

You can also get a TN turbo that bolts on. There is the standard .84 and 1.0 for about $1300 from BWD or you could get the TN BB 1.0 for about $1700 from BWD as well. I have ran both the standard .84 and now I have the new BB unit in the EX. It spools really well and there is no hint of surge at my elevation of 7000ft. The GTP38R has been known to surge for some people so that is why I did not get that turbo.

Re: turbo upgrade

I ran the standard drop-in TN .84 with my stock injectors, and it worked great. Spool-up was awesome, I didn't see any egt drop with it, but the top-end pulled harder.

It was a different story when I put the mini me's in though. Granted, the TN turbo still had the .84 housing on it, so I can't make an even comparison. But when I took it off and installed the GT-38R, my egt's came down over 100 degrees while cruising, peak boost is up about 6psi, and the truck is much stronger. I dynoed 389 with the TN unit, mini me's, and stock fuel system. With the 38R and completed fuel system I dynoed 443.

I'm not bad mouthing the TN unit at all, because it worked better than advertised with stock injectors, it just wasn't enough for the Stage III's.

Well a good turbo that will just bolt on would be an H2E, then you have room to grow with many different turbos to choose from. But it is a little more than the afformentioned turbos, however it comes with a ton more stuff.
