Urbanwheeler- Care to elaborate? IMO Since they are in a single shear application it would seem a shoulder would be better. I wish I could find the article, but I recall the ring gear bolts were said to be a "weak link" because they didn't have a shoulder. Having said that it was not implied the axle as a hole was weak, just that Ford could have used a better design bolt for the application. My understanding of fasteners and loading would support this, but I way not see the whole picture.
