38R install

So after a couple tribulations that come with taking apart the stock exhaust fro the first time in the trucks life, its on and in. My first time pulling any turbo so i think it went relatively smooth. Now that its in though there seems to be some issue, i can only hit 15# of boost (20-22 with stock) and my EGTs are a lot higher then stock. Is there a way to check if it is oiling properly? this is my major concern Ive never seen it be an issue before but it would be catastrophic if it wasn't. don't see any exhaust leaks, haven't really checked for boost leaks, could it be a waste gate issue?

thanks for the help

-Don

Re: 38R install

Make a boost leak tool and test for leaks. Could also be leaking from the up pipes.

Re: 38R install

You have classic symptoms of a boost leak.. I would suggest taking a peek at the clamp at the back of the turbo.

Re: 38R install

Probably a boost leak.

Check the waste gate though. Looks like you are only running a chip so you will be able to tighten the waste gate way up. The waste gates are not always set correctly from Garrett. I am running a Banks Big Head actuator (which is alot stiffer than stock) I am supposed to set the actuator 6 turns in, I went 8 to make sure it is staying closed and can build 32 psi.

Once you get it figured out you will like it.

Re: 38R install

Disconnected the waste gate and went for a drive no change, im pretty sure i have a boost leak i think i can hear it too, i did switch te oring over to the compressor outlet, i also put in bellowed uppipes with the install, and i see no soot on any exhaust connections ofr firewall so i THINK my exhaust is tight. how does one make a boost leak tool. deputy which clamp are you speaking of? the collector to the turbine?

Re: 38R install

I made one identical to Mattymx's and it worked great, cost like $15 and I had a gauge hanging around, mine was Y-pipe rubbers i bent them a bit when i installed the turbo, and it put tiny cuts in the hoses, had to get new ones. But all is good now.
