Conversion from 2wd to 4wd?

Ive got a 2000 7.3 2wd, i dont want to trade it but...i was wondering how expensive, complicated, and how long it would take to convert from a 2wd to 4wd, as an at home project? I was wondering if anyone had done this ans how it went? Im tired of doing nothing but spin my tires!

It can be done, all the holes are there. Your best bet is to find a wreaked 02-04 F250-F350 & get the front axle (Dana 60 in those years) transfer case (manual case over electric is easier to swap & more reliable) driveshafts, all the steering components & leaf springs. If possiable get the tranny as well since you will either have to swap in a 4x4 tranny to bolt up to the T case or change out the tail of your 2wd tranny.

Re: Conversion from 2wd to 4wd?

I did one once on an '01 X. It was an electrical nightmare. It was all bolt on as far as the axle, t-case, 4X trans, drivelines, front axle etc. sourced from a rolled excursion. The problem was the electrical for the 4X4. If you just use a manual floor shifter setup and don't worry about a 4X4 light coming on on the dash it should be all mechanical bolt-on with possible minimal drilling for brackets. the frames are the same, just check for bolt holes to see what you'll have to do. also, make sure the gear ratios are the same in the axles you use. You can also do just the front axle first, and later do the trans/t-case swap, or the other way around if it's too much of a job to do at once.

Well, i pull a trailer right now ever once in a while but its not real heavy. Id like to mod it some but all i do is spin even with just the chip, intake and stacks...its also a manual. I dont know if that matters or not...will i need to lift it or will the new suspension in the front be enough...I think i would probably not worry about the light coming on.

Find a 4X4 you like. Sell your 2WD buy the 4X4 and be happy. With todays prices it should even be kida painless. Of course take off any nice arts you dont want to give away.

When you get the springs for the axle it will have everything you need. More lift is up to you. In the back a 2wd is the same height as a 4x4.

If you buy a lift kit then don't buy the leaf springs off of the donor truck.

I would try to update to the 05+ suspension if I were gonna do it from scratch... but that's just my $.02....

It wouldn't be "bolt together" but you could get it to work.
