Re: what all can pmr's take?

Be more specific.
Are you asking for a HP number?

300 HP with bad tuning could snap them in a heart beat.
375 HP with big nozzles could snap them

400HP should be able to live, with good tuning, and small nozzles.

I think he's considering buying an '03

and it's not a gaurantee that a 00 has forged.

Usually, but not always.

Re: what all can pmr's take?

eh, 400 is not as easy as some think. Well, on a budget anyway. Of course you can buy huge injectors and a good turbo, and detune it and you're there.

I however like to err on the side of conservatism.
I feel the setup I have should be capable of 400, with a good turbo and a good tranny putting it all down.

Once I get this fuel pressure deal figured out we'll see what happens.

YA I know the limits. Went 2 far. Me I would get a good turbo that moves ~1000 cfm of air. Intake, Exhaust, Bigoil, Trans and some stage 2s or tiny 3 stage 3s. also make sure you get some good very conservative tunes. I'd even recommend that you get CP tuning to insure a long life. I'd also look to stay in the 350-375 HP range just to leave yourself a cushon. Yes i had more HP that that and busted. there are people that have more that are still alive but why chance it if you just want a tow rig.

Re: what all can pmr's take?

Maybe just once a thread asking about how much an engine component can handle will properly be answered in terms of the values actually stressing them.....cylinder pressure, or in more general terms, TORQUE.

You can expect to Torque the powdered metal rods out of the engine at around 900 or so ft/lbs I would imagine if it was durated, everyday.

Considering that every powerstroke known to man peaks at 27-2800ish, that means that for most cases, this will coincide with a power output of around 440ish horsepower.

So run good tuning and keep your torque value under say, 875ft/lbs of rod breaking torque.

Now if you peaked at 2600rpm, that would likely give you just a hair under 430rwhp. But if you peaked at say, 3400rpm, you'd be rolling 566rwhp.....same load, same stress, same chance of rodding the block as the 430rwhp at 2600.

Considering that variance in power of 130 or so with the same engine stress....it should be clear that power output is not a decent judge of engine stress at all. Torque output is a much better gauge of rod life.

Diesel engine durability is a game of torque and thermal management. The rpms are so low that inertial load is a non-issue at this point.

So keep your torque down for safety, not power.
