Extra Oil Cooler???

Been noticing that engine oil temps are getting a bit on the toasty side when repeatedly hammering on the truck. It looks like two hpop's, two turbos, etc are giving things a workout.

How much benefit would I see by adding an auxiliary oil cooler (something the size of a V-10 trans cooler)?

Also, what would be the best way to plumb it without compromising lube oil pressure? Route it from the port on the oil filter mount or another way?

Thanks!

Re: Extra Oil Cooler???

I was thinking of running it off the pressure port on the side of the filter mount and then dumping back in at the inspection port on the driver side of the motor above the filter mount. Plumbing it up would be fairly simple.

The cooling and extra oil capacity would be nice, but it's got to lower lube oil pressure. I just wonder what the critical point is for what we're trying to supply?

Re: Extra Oil Cooler???

I've thought about making 2 plates to bolt to the stock mounting points and run an external oil to air cooler and a remote mount oil filter.

I would just use stock gaskets and no longer have the coolant cool the oil.

Just an idea I had, not really too sure how it would work.

So, what is your definition of toasty (degrees F) and how cool do you want it?

I've been seeing oil temps in the upper 240's. I'd like to see them more in the 220's.

Re: Extra Oil Cooler???

i think the highest buddy has seen out of my setup is 207* i heard that it tends to run hotter with extra stuff in line of the oiling.

Re: Extra Oil Cooler???

I guess that it's worth mentioning that I was seeing these temps when it was around 100 degrees outside, after making a couple runs with egt's well over 1600. Coolant temp was fairly steady at about 205.

Re: Extra Oil Cooler???

Years ago when I ran my big single HPOP, I made a block-off plate in place of the HPOP res. I took the feed from that and sent it to a trans cooler (now motor oil) then to my HPOP feed. In line there I never saw more than about 170* - 180*. The cooler was in line with one of the elect. fans.

I'd worry about pulling oil from just any port to run to a cooler and dump back to the motor. It'll pull from your lube psi, and I'd think you'd want to keep that up. I notice this feeding the second turbo and aux. supply to the HPOP res. I'd routinely see 8 to 10 psi at idle...

I remember seeing Byron Eddins photos of what he made. Blocked off both front and rear ports and eliminated the stock oil cooler altogether and sent the oil to a HUGE oil cooler.
