exaust question

my buddy took his exaust off about 4 inches in front of his rear axle. he said it helps m.p.g. and performance because less backpressure, plus it helps hear the turbo better. my question is could that do damage to anything? could it rust the underside of the truck cause the exaust fumes?

Re: exaust question

I doubt it help with MPG but it will add fumes under the bed and cause the underside to be coated with soot. JMHO.

Re: exaust question

Soot... I have a cut out I can open from the cab, its installed by the tranny X member. It covers the underside of the truck! No HP gain on the dyno, no EGT change on the road, just sound!

Re: exaust question

We installed an electronically operated cut out at on Matt Stuckey's old CR a few years ago at Garmons. It was in front of the Muffler, and picked up 5 hp on the dyno, covered the undercarriage and tailgate in soot though.

I might be completely wrong on this, but it thought soot when subjected to moisture over time becomes caustic/acidic and not good. This is why IIRC cracked flue linings in brick chimneys can destroy the brick work over time. You might do some "googling" on soot and moisture and see what you find.

Just something to consider/tink about

I would have loved to do something like that with my Van to solve my "drone" problem but all I could come up with was the following which wasn't exactly what I wanted. Before you ask that was actually installed on a function exhaust system and tested at idle, but not on the highway. However, if you saw that or even "TWINS" driving down the highway you would do a double take ...
