Died while driving

03 7.3 hydra tuner, 160/30 injectors, I was leaving work (it's a very terrible road) and on some bumps the truck skipped a bit, as if it shut off for half a second, then on the highway it started doing it worse and worse, until I had to pull over, idles fine, I hardly touched the computer and it instantly died, I unplugged the tuner and put it back in, seemed to fire up fine and run good, go down highway, make it 2 minutes and it completely dies, it will fire but won't run, I took the computer out on the road pulled the tuner, cleaned it all a bit, started up for about 15 seconds and died, will not start, even with tuner unplugged, am I going to need a new computer?

Took the computer out again, took off tuner, cleaned it all, put back on,still no start but it will fire once in awhile, plug it into scanner, pulled p0471, p0344, and p0603... Changed cps with brand new Ford, no change... Input appreciated.

Fired up and ran normal for probably 15-20 seconds, then began missing and died again, read codes again, p1670 now comes up and p1000 along with everything else.
What exactly are these codes? That would help us. I personally don’t have time right this second to look them all up.

Fib,

Rough road?.. Have you looked for wires that have rubbed through the insulation? Or for broken wires? I think there are cheaper repair options on the PCM - I have found (but not bookmarked) several sites that will repair PCMs for the 7.3.

Can't get it to fire at all now it seems, gotta charge the batteries up now, unplugged icp, still no start, unplugged ebpv sensor, still no start, going to buy a used idm and see if that'll do much, after that I guess I'll make the jump for the CPS, does this sound like the right path?

Fib,

What are the current codes? How about the KOEO readings? There was another post just the other day (6.0 motor I think) in which the BARO sensor had died causing problems with the transmission - might be worth looking at.

P1670 (electronic feedback signal not detected)
P0471 (ebp sensor circuit malfunction)
P0344(CPS intermittent)
P0603(pcm keep alive memory error)
P1000( something about onboard diagnostics not complete)
This is the first time I've ever had the check engine come on. The truck is a manual transmission. I cannot do the self tests, I've just got a scanner that'll read the codes and that's it

P0603 and P1000 are common when you disconnect the battery or take out the PCM. EBP and CPS are located really close to each other on the motor, so it makes me wonder if there may be a wire harness issue. CPS would definitely cause the motor dying issues.

I have a brand new CPS in it, not to say that it couldn't be bad either but... I've looked at the harness a bit, haven't noticed anything, could take a closer look, I got it started again, had to hold it at half throttle to keep it running, read the codes while running, I've gotta go to bed so I'll update them tomorrow with the exact codes, but they were to do with injector voltage low and such, as well as a glow plug circuit problem, thanks for the help so far, I appreciate it

Sorry for the delay, been busy. So the new codes that came are are as following
P0572- system voltage low
P1280-injector or control pressure sensor circuit low
P0381-glow plug/heater indicator circuit
P0340-Sgc signal/no sgc signal

It's thrown like 8 codes now, I'm still learning to the pcm ?

Okay so I cleared all the codes because it's a mess, now I'm only getting a CPS code (I changed CPS again with a known good one) and I'm getting p1670, (electronic feedback signal not detected) so I'll swap the idm relay and what not and if that checks out I'll order up a remanned idm tomorrow.

Any luck?

My truck did almost the same thing when the IDM took a dump. Was driving down the highway and it felt like it was starving for fuel and then just quite. Mine was full of water and the case was correred away.

I just took the idm off now, worked a bunch of ot so just got to it now, the case is very corroded on the outside, and on the back side of it there is a hole as if it's missing a plug? Looks dirty inside hole, I split the case and it looks very clean besides one corner looks like it has some corrosion on the case, thoughts?

Mine was corroded as hell and there was a hole in the back of it. It was full of water, the only code I got was a communication code for the IDM to the PCM. I have had problems with the pedals, but usually it was you just lose the throttle. Did you try clearing everything out and run a KOEO on it?

This doesn't appear to be full of water that I could tell, but there is a small amount of corrosion inside, and where the plug is missing it's dirty inside, I tried to order the fancy hvhf swamps one yesterday but they are on backorder ? where did you get yours from? I didn't try to scan it koeo after I cleared it, but once I cleared it the CE light didn't come on until I started to crank/fire, if that means anything....

I got mine from Ford, I think it was $250. Did you check for chafing wires? The connector on the driver side valve cover sometime rubs on the VC, and also there is a spot right by the engine lifting bracket on the front driver side they wear on.

Yeah I couldn't find anything, my Ford dealer doesn't sell them anymore, ended up finding a remanned one, $330 shipped, no core required, all the other ones were $500+ still waiting for it to show up. I will take another look at the wires though, used to be a logging truck so I'm sure everything moved around a lot in there.

Welp, finally got the new idm in today, no change at all, fired for 2 seconds ran like trash then died, idek what im going to do now, I can't justify spending $1200 on a pcm for this thing..., In the event I do find a cheap ish one, with my single shot injectors, I'm guessing I have to have the tuner on there, is there anyway of knowing the tuner won't fry the next one.

#28 ·
Yeah that's what I figured, put it on with no tuner, no difference at all, fired up for a second, shut down, I could get it running again if I held the throttle down, and it would run like trash, like half cylinders, then after repeating this, just won't start again at all unless I give it a rest for awhile, something funky in the harness somewhere? It just keeps throwing back the electronic feedback signal not detected and the CPS code, I think I'm done with this thing for the winter.

Sounds like your having my kinda luck, as stated in my post(7.3 stalled while driving...help) i have high suspicion that its the idm from my findings... but just my luck the fact i replaced other sensors first in an attempt to diagnose, im sure something else will be Fu*k'd up.

I have a guy a few hours from me who is a Ford Specialist with acres of parts, he does ship parts, an IDM with exchange is 100$ CAD, id assume at his size and reputation he would stand behind the parts for X amount of time , if you need a pcm, or anything else for that matter of rather high cost, pm me, i could hook you up with his info. if you dont mind waiting on shipping, could probably help save your wallet.
