7.3 Massive Oil Leak

Yes, I did search the other posts and couldn't find anything that was close to what I have going on.

So I have a 2002 F250 7.3 stock everything apart from the interior.

I just was headed to the grocery store and when i looked at my truck i saw a little bit of a spot under it. Figured maybe it was a combo of water since it just rained and maybe a bit oil no biggie.

So i left and stopped at the gas station to fill up while filling up I noticed about a 3-quart puddle forming and drips leading to me. I stopped and headed home about 1 mile. On the way, there it started to lose part and smoke but that stopped and it made it home backed in great.

Put a board under the truck and about 3 more quarts were there within 2 mins. The heavy flow of liquid gold slowed down to a drip and I got under to wipe it all down and find the leak or hole that I was expecting.

After wiping down I did the investigation, I found the valley on top has a few puddles of oil sitting there, outside of that nothing on the valve covers top or side, nothing on the front of the motor, and nothing higher than the puddle so nothing on the hood or anything. I climbed under again and the passenger side seems to have all of the oil on that area. There were a few drips here and there driver side but i took the corner into my community like I was at Daytona trying to hopefully not lose power and have to push this struck home.

I looked at the dipstick oil ring and its not leaking and I doubt it could leak onto the top of the engine, the oil drain is fine no drips after wipe down, the oil pan gasket is good no leaks after wipe down, the lines all look in good shape, I don't see any hoses hanging, I don't see any leftover Prius parts where I may have run one over by accident. I pulled the dip stick and it is low now which would make me think it's not the Diesel Fuel/dirt issue I've seen people talk about. If anyone has any ideas, help or hints I could really use it so I can get to work on Monday and before one of our allies tries to invade my garage with the amount of oil on the floor.

Re: 7.3 Massive Oil Leak

You might also check the oil rail plugs on the back of the motor

Re: 7.3 Massive Oil Leak

My truck blew a o-ring on my crossover between my heads last year and left a trail of oil for 3 miles before the engine shut down from low oil. It filled the top of the engine valley full of oil. Just a place to check but still more likely a turbo o-ring. I crawled up on top of the truck and had my wife start the engine and it didn't take me long to see where the oil was coming from. Hope this helps.

Re: 7.3 Massive Oil Leak

I would sure think so if its pouring out as bad as mine was. I also read about the oil gally plug on the back of the passenger side head leaking. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Re: 7.3 Massive Oil Leak

Possibly, depends on where the o rings are blown at. You'll prolly see a pool of oil in the area

Also I stuffed a handful of mechanic paper towels and dried out the valley on top of the engine before my wife cranked it so I could see where oil was coming from because mine had so much oil on top.

Re: 7.3 Massive Oil Leak

Alright so riddle me this batman, so the update cause I'm not sure if I actually found it or if I'm gonna pull the right unit off. So I filled it up took about 1.5 gallons of oil. Then I double checked everything, made sure that the valley was wiped down and clean. Started the truck which started no hesitation or hard cranking issues, and didn't see any leaks, gushing areas, or problems, nothing under the truck either. Turned it off, started it back up the same thing, after about a 3 mins of me watching it thinking that maybe I really did run a Prius over, and nothing is wrong a slow leak started to forum. I watched it for about 45 seconds and in the valley about 1/2 a cup formed worth of juicy 15w40. I shut her down, asked her if she was in pain or needed a hug. Waited about 2 hours and went out to check under the truck and in the valley and there is no new puddles and the valley hasn't risen. Looks like the leak is coming from the underside of the HPOP? i think the unit is below are pictured with expertly drew diagrams.

So this is a top down picture but that black circle thing, the leak is under that on the side closer to the valley.
