E99 7.3 smokes after warming up

My buddy has a e99 7.3 that has had a hard life but it still runs like a top and is great to drive. It smokes like crazy once it warms up!! Doesn’t smoke when it’s cold. Goes through about a quart of oil/week. It’s dripping down the stack and is obviously going right out the exhaust. I suggested the turbo seals are probably junk and we should rebuild it, does anyone have any other ideas?

Turbo seals are real bad pull and rebuild. Or have rebuilt. KC turbo sells a upgrade/ rebuild kit you could buy.

Does it make any sense to replace the cartridge? Or is the KC rebuild/upgrade kit the best option?

What is difficult about rebuilding the turbo? Seals hard to get seated right or are we just worried about the longevity of the rebuilt unit?

You could just replace the center section I think Riffraff diesel has them . I have never rebuilt one I just saw that KC turbo sells a rebuild kit that is a upgrade from the stock turbo. A stock turbo is a 270 degree thrust bearing a upgrade would be a 360 degree thrust bearing or a ball bearing turbo is a great upgrade. I been looking at a kc38r for my rig to replace my GTP38R If your not comfortable rebuilding your self then I buy a rebuilt turbo or send his out to get rebuilt. IMG_0142.jpgIMG_0141.jpg
