Smoke or MPG's, or both. Possible?

Guys just bought my first power stoke...Ok I'll be honest, I just lost my diesel virginity. I just purchased an '07 King Ranch. Now that I am off the high of buying my first REAL truck and I'm floating back to the land of "real life" I have a few questions for my new found brethren.

1) Most of all I want MPGs. What mods are necessary to achieve ~20 mpgs?: intake, tuner, exhaust, DPF delete? Essentially more air in + more air out = less fuel going unburnt = better fuel economy. Am I correct?

2) Like I said I'm mostly in this for the MPG's but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't want to roll a little smoke from time to time at the neighborhood stop light. Keeping in mind that I not interested in racing or pulling, what can I do to increase horsepower and ft lbs that doesn't result in a $5000 bill or doesn't ruin the factory parts.

To summarize, can I achieve ~450-500hp with some simple mods without trashing my tranny, turbo, injectors, etc.?

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help.

450...no
420ish...yes but that's it without expensive stuff.
And don't even start with the "I wanna smoke" bull####. Nobody wants to hear it...it's a stupid "goal" to have. Makes you and the rest of the diesel world look like douchebags.

Spending money I don't have on crap I don't need to impress people I don't know.

P.S. That terms of service thing you had to agree to specifically states not to start multiple threads that are the same. If you had read it you would have known that and not done it. Perhaps you should go back and reread it. I got rid of the others.

Have fun with your stock truck. I'll be out enjoying my smoke free 750+ hp diesel.
Not my fault you think the site rules don't apply to you...

SCT tuner with custom tunes from Innovate diesel. Youll want to turn off the egr to keep the hot gases from reentering the intake and a 4" exhaust will help it breathe. The stock intake is actualy very effective till after the 500HP mark. I just bought a Livewire SCT tuner from MPT tuning with EGT sensor but have not had a chance to check fuel milage increase.

So I typed out a nice polite message about that... But the thread was gone when I finished. Oh well... Such is life.

To the OP, this site is a wealth of free knowledge, by you have to conduct yourself in a better manner buddy. Just chill out and everything will be okay.

Smoke is un-burned wasted fuel and it's bring serious heat on our hobby. Just pretend when you see some dip#### blowing smoke, just pretend it's a cloud of twenty dollar bills flying out the tailpipe of that truck.

I think your goal of 20MPG is a little high for the average mods. I have the average mods on our 06 King Ranch and I see about 18-19 on the highway at 70MPH. But t's better than what you'll see stock. Do an intake, exhaust, and a SCT with custom tunes. Aggie at Truck Source Diesel wrote mine and I'm very happy with it!

Good luck, and just remember, you're in a alpha male dominated sport's forum. Just thicken up your skin and you have a lot of tools here to use for free if you can control your emotions.

You take care now!

The stock intake is good, but I still saw an increase in MPG both empty and pulling. It was only about 3.5MPG empty, and 2 towing, but it's better than it was.

Very possible. I can make it smoke...I choose not to. It's obscenely fast with virtually no smoke if driven right.
