xcal 2

i might be buying an xcal 2 off this guy and i know little information about them.

Since everyone here seems to love the sct, i thought i would ask if there is any type of part number or anything i should watch out for.

I know the xcal3 can come preprogrammed or empty where you must load custom tunes. What about the xcal2? are they all the same?Oh and will they work on a 6l diesel?

Thank you

Re: xcal 2

Find out how many times it has been unlocked - with the xcal2 every time you get reflashed, or switch from one vehicle to another you have to "unlock" the device. I believe SCT only allows 3 or 4 unlocks and then you have to send it in to them to be reset, its bull$hit.

Re: xcal 2

The only way I know of is when you plug into computer with the software...as far as buying one, there are usually a few floating around in the classified section on here - I have had mine for 3 years and only unlocked it once. Everyone seems to have their own opinion on reflashes and tunes needing to be written for a matching flash, but I am convinced per conversations with reputable tuners that it doesn't really matter what the stock flash is since you are programming a whole new file anyway - with the excpetion that 05-07 files will not work in 03-04 and vise versa and excursions. Only time I will ever unlock it again is if it needs to go into another truck, since it has to relearn that specific trucks stock strategy and if the VIN doesn't match up I do not think it will allow you to even program the truck.

Re: xcal 2

Yea you will be fine with the Xcal II. I've had mine for 5 years and haven't had one single problem with it. Just make sure to go to the SCT website and keep the drivers/device up to date and you should be good to go!

Re: xcal 2

You should be able to plug it into the OBD port and see how many unlocks are left if I'm not mistaken. They come with 5 unlocks new, so if it was used on one truck it should have 4 left. Check though. It NEEDS to be put back to stock on the truck it's coming off of, otherwise it needs to be sent in and I think it's like $150 to have it unlocked, whether it's out of unlocks or not stock settings.

You can hold 3 custom tunes on an xcal2. I would still recommend getting your own tunes for your truck, since different tire sizes, gear ratios, and just your plain old driving habits will change the way the tunes are used, just to name a few.

Re: xcal 2

so it says 5 unlocks left, but then it says aftermarket. What does that mean?

the box was unopened, but the lower portion where you plug a usb cable into was cut out, so im wondering if he bought it with a custom tune on it. Its also a 9400 which did not come with any tunes , so im wondering if thats the case. Would it still be any good?

As long as he didn't use it, you're good to go, just order up some tunes for it.

Have you tried programming the truck? Plug it in and see if it will let you.

I hope the last user didn't leave his truck tuned and sell you this.... (doesn't sound like it, but anything is possible I guess).
