6.0 Dyno runs with auto trans questions

Ok, we had a local dyno event this past weekend and had about 5 6.0's show up. Some seemed to dyno pretty easy even up towards 30% load, but some we just could not get to stay in gear. I know they are to be run in OD, and in 5th gear which is 1:1. Problem is we had one truck we had to drop the load down to 10% because it just kept downshifting. He was running Erics tunes, but so were some of the others... Everyone was either running Erics tunes (all x-street, and one x-race), one truck was stock and one was running canned tunes.

I know there are "dyno tunes" but how do they work? Do they just lock the tranny into 5th gear? How do you get the tires even spinning, does it start right off in 5th gear? That seems crazy. (forgive my ignorance on this).

Also is there anything that you can control the trans with like maybe autoenginuity? Something similar to the EFI live setup for the D-max's where they can change gears from a labtop, and lock the converter?

Thanks for any insight.

dyno tune locks in 5th gear around 20 mph normally then you can roll into it from there....and no the only controller is the tuner.

shop I went to did all the trucks in OD if there was any question about keeping them in 1:1 (so basically all auto's were in OD)

Seemed to me and some other guys that you could get it into top gear around 50mph or so and 1500 rpm then roll into it and have it matte just after 2000 rpm and it wouldn't downshift. Seemed 2k was the magic point to have it matted to keep it from downshifting.

We usually lock the truck 5th gear, 1:1 on our dyno. If you don't have that program available or no time to swap programs between pulls, just dyno in OD. We usually dyno around 8% higher numbers in OD, depending on the brand dyno and if the dyno is able to be loaded.

I thought you were SUPPOSED to dyno in OD on the 5R110?

Re: 6.0 Dyno runs with auto trans questions

We're talking about the same thing, but I mispoke.

I had the truck in 5th gear (for all the trucks), but did NOT have the tow/haul on. Left the button in OD, but only went to 5th gear. (feels like shifting to 4th).

I thought Eric from Innovative was the one who told me to run it this way.

Re: 6.0 Dyno runs with auto trans questions

This was posted in mine thread another place.

5R110 shifts 1-2-3-5-6 with 6th being OD. I don't have the gear ratio's handy or I'd post them up. I'll see if I can get them for you. 4th is only used in extremely cold weather--something like 5 or 10* F. There's no real way to get totally accurate Dyno numbers without a dyno file because there's no way to keep it from shifting.

It's a six speed that usually uses five speeds. The ratios of fourth and fifth are too close to use both in any sequence of shifts. The trans will use fourth or fifth, but never both.

When the trans is colder than 0F it uses fourth, not fifth. The only reason for this is that the trans won't reliabily make a 3-5 shift when it's that cold, but due to the way the trans works a 3-4 is MUCH easier to make.

Also, at certain speeds where the truck is in sixth gear and moving too fast to kickdown to third gear when the dirver floors it, it will go to fourth gear instead of fifth gear. That give almost 10% more gearing for better acceleration. Without a scan tool to monitor commanded gear the driver would never know that it did this. From fourth gear the trans can go to sixth or third, depending on whether it speeds up or slows down. It can NEVER go from fourth to fifth.

The next question everyone has is, "Why did Ford design it to have six speeds and make two of them so close that one isn't useful?"

The answer is in the way the trans was designed. It's really two transmissions in one case. There is a two speed in the front of the trans. It has ratios of 1:1 and 0.71:1. The three speed in the rear has ratios of 3.09:1 (later models changed to 3.11:1,) 1.54:1, and 1:1. By shifting the front trans (usually called the overdrive unit) between it's two ratios you get two ratios for each of the rear transmission's three ratios.

1st: 1:1 times 3.09:1 = 3.09:1
2nd 0.71 times 3.09:1 = 2.2:1
3rd 1:1 times 1.54:1 = 1.54:1
4th 0.71:1 times 1.54:1 = 1.09:1
5th 1:1 times 1:1 = 1:1
6th .71:1 times 1:1 = .71:1

Re: 6.0 Dyno runs with auto trans questions

Rescue, thanks for that bit of info.

Sounds like the only way to do this right is to get a dyno file.

So again, how does the dyno file work? Does it just start right in 5th gear? Guess I should just order one and try it out!

The dyno file shifts 1,2,3,5 very quickly and locks at 10mph.
