i need help low boost lots of smoke

ok I'm at a serious stand still with this, My mods are as follows 190/75 injectors airdog pushing to stock pump, ceramic coated pistons, s&b intake 5" diamond eye exhaust, I'mcurrentlyrunning Vivians tune, but also have erics as well. I'm running a modded rcd 68mm pmax with a batmowheel here is my problem at full throttle i only see 25 psi of boost witheither tune I'm hitting 1800 egts all day and this thing smokes like i got a tire fire behind my truck it's bad, this is the third turbo I've tried and all have had similar results, i just rebuilt the engine so all new sensors and everything are in it i can't figure this out that turbo should be cleaning it up to a light haze if that and i don't think i should be over 1400 egts, the turbo builder said i need a boost fooler idk I'm stumped and getting discouragedreal fast any input would be greatly appreciated guys

I wouldn't use a boost fooler at all seeing as the tuner can keep the boost where ever they want. Have you checked for a leak in your up pipe? Also have you checked for a torn/leaking boot? If all that checks out its more than likely tune related, I would try a tune from drew at back roads performance. His raped ape tune makes a lot of power, if he can't get your boost above 25 psi then you know there's an issue with the truck.

Is the only real issue when you are at full throttle? How about normal driving around town?

Re: i need help low boost lots of smoke

I've checked all the normal stuff up pipes boots charge air cooler I've had ids hooked up and everything checks out, mechanicly the truck is sound, i haven't really done allot with tuning yet but my buddy has an 06 with exact same setup and his truck runs harder and cleans up really good, Eric wrote his tune and i had Eric write mine the same but the two trucks are totally different i want to Blame the turbo but is the third one with almost the same results, in town it drives fine and it does have allot of power the only issue is when the converter is locked and you start surely rolling into it at about 60mph i get compressor surge really bad and all the turbos I've tried have had this some worse than others but my stock turbo didn't do it same tuning and all

Re: i need help low boost lots of smoke

The RCD 68mm turbo runs a stock powermax turbine wheel which is far to small to efficiently run the compressor. I'd hate to say it but if drew can't get it to build more boost with his tune you might want to look into getting another turbo.

Re: i need help low boost lots of smoke

I've seen more than one guy have an issues with this type of setup. Too much fuel for that turbo. Don't get me wrong the turbo would work good with stock injectors or slightly bigger. I'd look into a different turbo if your tuners can't get things figured out.

Are you sure your friend has the same turbo and doesn't have these issues?

that's the thing we both got the turbo from a shop in town and he got the turbos from rcd then sent them to a different place to have batmowheels installed, i can't say for sure what the heck is all done to the turbos and of course can't get any real answers, i talked to Adrian at mtw and said he's re worked the rcd 68 before for people for the same issues,i almost just want to sell it and build my own non vgt setup but i can't do that to somebody and sleep at night knowing the turbo i sold has these problems,Adrian said for 700$ he could re work it and make his mad max out of it but i don't want to keep throwing money at a turbo that just won't work but at the same time I'm already 2100$ deep into it

Found another example:

I thought I knew more about the differences in the "turbo fart" and surging.

Re: i need help low boost lots of smoke

Basically you need a smaller compressor or a bigger turbine. I'm willing to bet that the compressor housing has been modded too far to drop down to a 65mm compressor. Your best bet is a bigger turbine wheel. You might experience more lag depending on your tuning.

Re: i need help low boost lots of smoke

Heavy is correct, to fix the surge issue you'll need a larger turbine wheel. I'd say something around a the size of a gt40 would help out quite a bit with your issue, but you will gain a little lag with the bigger wheel.
