Need some Help. I know nothing!

I don't know a lot about tuning and chipping Diesels.

I just bought a 2006 6.0L F350 Crewcab 4x4

It has an Edge w/ Juice CTS power tuner (thingamajob) in it.

When I bought it it would blow a large puff of smoke out the back whenever I dropped the hammer. great for pissing off Prius owners behind me, but I'm not a huge fan of blowing through fuel like that.

it was in Tow mode or setting 2. I changed it to setting 1 which just changes the transmission settings.

This truck has no mods other then 285-65-18's on it.

I don't plan on doing much to it. I think its fine as it is.

If I played with the tuner, what would be the best setting for mileage? I'd like to remove the cat, but the emissions testing place probably wouldn't like it.

I plan on using it for towing, but nothing over 10K.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Need some Help. I know nothing!

About the only thing that CTS is good for is monitoring different engine parameters...which it is great for, and lots of people use it for just that. The tuning side of it isn't worth a crap in my opinion. Get yourself some custom tunes and call it a day. You'll be happy with how much better the truck runs/shifts, and your truck will thank you in the long run.

Re: Need some Help. I know nothing!

can I put custom tunes into the Edge? or is it not programmable.

Sorry, I have no idea what I'm doing with this tuner. This is my first diesel truck, and I'm trying to be careful. I really don't want to blow it up.

Re: Need some Help. I know nothing!

You can not.

If you want to go custom, look up any of the reputable vendors out there (IDP, Gearhead, Backroads Performance, etc) and get a package deal. Will come with a SCT tuner and a set of custom tunes. You already have the CTS, so something like the SCT X3 would be just fine for you. You just tell them what's been done to your truck and they'll write you a set of tunes specifically for your truck and email them to you. You load the on the SCT tuner, then load it on your truck. Done deal. All of them have great towing tunes, and as far as more power, keep it on the mild side with the tuning and you'll be safe.

I promise you once you run a custom tune, you'll know what I'm talking about with how the generic Edge programming isn't all that!

Re: Need some Help. I know nothing!

nice truck. what he said you can always just put the cat back on.

could put a drop in air fitler or change it to a cold air intake.

be careful about how high you truck htat truck on high hp tunes it may pop a head gasket.

custom tunes are mostly better for it. as far as tranny and head gasket

2008 got a new flex pipe installed. S-b intake, 4in dp back exhaust, gear head tunes All deletes done now.
flow pro hot pipe. CCV mode.

Re: Need some Help. I know nothing!

I'm not interested in making it a high horsepower monster, just reliable with good economy.

I like the truck a lot. I set it back to stock last night and drove it to work. 30 miles.

The truck showed 17.5 mpg. not bad considering I was going 75-80 mph.

For comparison the Toyota Sequoia SR5 4x4, I traded in was getting 14.5 mpg highway with a 4.7L V8 and 5 speed auto.

Re: Need some Help. I know nothing!

I'm not sure if it is possible to keep the CTS if it is the juice /w attitude and run SCT tunes.

An earlier post by a member said he called EDGE and asked if he could remove the programmer portion (attitude ) and run the CTS as a stand-alone unit, and they said no.

I'd be very leery of running any tunes with that still in place. Make sure and do your home work before you do anything.

Re: Need some Help. I know nothing!

My truck came with a Edge and Juice, could not use just the
CST that comes with Juice, if using a different programmer, the CST seeks out the juice monitor and if it don't find it, it will not come on. I called EDGE to confirm.
