turbo mystery..solve it!

My buddies 06 has this weird problem..he called me today and brought it to me..it has an egr delete straight 4" and SCT preloaded on performance. Well, its making a lot more turbo whine at idle and while driving
it also smokes a HELL of a lot more on a 40 punch..led me to see that the turbo isn't wanting to spool up as fast as it should. At an idle and a rev to 2k, the boost gauge barely moves. It still runs like a raped ape, but
At WOT it steadily hazes smoke..it shouldn't. And on spool down it stays whining down a lot longer than it should. What could this be? Were pulling the turbo tomorrow to see what we can find. There's no bucking or jerking,
No lack of power really, just a lot more whining and lag from 40+ punches and a lot of smoke..air flow isn't restricted either. ???

How many miles on the truck? Is it just as simple as stuck turbo vanes?

Black smoke don't mean it's broke... it means your tuning sucks!

Only 98k..I wouldn't think it was a vane..it blows plenty of smoke so its well dry lubricated..plus he keeps a foot hung off in it all the time..could it be a bearing goin?

Is 98k supposed to be long? I've seen them stick far before that!?

Have you checked the up-pipes? Is it possible you have a leak? Mine whistled like crazy when I had a cracked up pipe, until I got on it.

Re: turbo mystery..solve it!

very true, im not saying it wouldnt be a vane, im just "wanting" to doubt it..he called me earlier and says it running fine right now, about 10lbs of boost 65mph...idk. it may be a vane just hanging up you rekon? then when it hits so many rpms it frees? i never checked the up pipes...how bad would the crack have to be to cause performance issues like that?

Carbon build up? Lol he always has his foot on the gas=soot
I'm just saying

No boost till 2k rpm

I'd check for a leaking cac hose then diag for stuck vgt vanes

Re: turbo mystery..solve it!

very true, but that program hadnt been on there for very long...maybe 4 months? mine blows more black than that but i dont stand in mine as often as his..matter of fact not NEAR as much...hes the kind of guy that just goes balls to the wall, flat to the floor EVERYWHERE no matter what. if i didnt FORCE him to get the egr delete, that truck would be sittin in my driveway with blown head gaskets to this day. so if we pull it off, we find a #$&! ton of soot build-up, i suppose ive heard you can clean em with oven cleaner? should the vanes be loose to the touch of a finger? if not does that mean theyre sticky? sorry never pulled a turbo..know how, just never pulled one before nor know what to expect with a VGT
