04 f250 looses power steering

This is something thats happened twice on me so far. When i am in tow/haul mode going down a hill and the truck downshifts while im slowing down to make a turn, the power steering seems to quit and almost made me go off the road. Both times the cooling fan was on as in i could really hear it whirl as the rpms went up when it downshifted. What could this be? An issue with the pump or gearbox? It hasn't happened to me before when the fan wasn't activated.

Possibly low fluid level causing bubbles to get into the lines. Possibly overheated or really old/bad fluid. I'd start with making sure your belt is good and not glazed over, then make sure your fluid level is topped off properly, and then maybe consider doing a flush. I know several guys have noted a big improvement after flushing their power steering system.

2004 Excursion 6.0
New HPOP/HPO system o-rings; Updated standpipes and dummy plugs
EGR delete; Rebuilt oil cooler; CCV collection mod
VR Black Diamond head gaskets and ARP studs
Oil and coolant bypass filters; Shell EC-1 coolant
Rebuilt turbo; 250 amp alt; 6000 watts of brain scrambling
One giant 240 pound English Mastiff riding shotgun!
