6.0 head gaskets and timing

Hey All,
I'm in the middle of doing gaskets and studs. I read in the shop manual that i need to turn the crank and align the dowl.
My question is why?
Can anyone give me a answer other than engine damage will occure.

It's not like these are adjustible rocker arms

Oh I'm doin this with cab on and so far it's not bad at all.......I probably just jinks myself!!!!

Its to keep the pistons off TDC while you tighten the rockers down.

I was going to ask something similar, so I'm glad I saw this post! My question is, what are we supposed to be aligning, and with what? Just rotate the engine so none of the pistons are at TDC or is there a mark on the balancer I should be looking for?
