1st Post - Hard Start, White Smoke while Cranking

Hello all, first post here! Picked up a 2003 6.0 last May, finally started getting into it....

Just loaded the Looney Tune about 4 days ago... here is the rundown:

2003 6.0
145k
FICM 48.5 - 49.0
New ICP
4 new injectors (small lot I bought it from says all 8, only 4 on Ford Receipt)
Stock coolers
stock head bolts
NO puking or coolant loss

Everything has been fine, just loaded up the Looney tune on Tues or Weds. First thing I notice is it starts very harshly after sitting. Starts like normal, but much harder and with black smoke.

Vivian (who, along with her crew, have been beyond awesome) asked me for a vid.
Went out this morning, and cranked forever, no start.
Tried again, and finally got her to fire up.

Video links below - Tons of white smoke during cranking.

Stiction? Glow Plugs?
What could have caused this?

Smoke in 2nd video is not from truck :priest:

Vivian is having DJ take a look at the vids as well. From my research it looks like it's fuel related. Hopefully nothing horrible... saving up for bulletproofing right now and can't really incur too much additional expenses. My wife would castrate me.

Re: 1st Post - Hard Start, White Smoke while Cranking

you have an o ring nicked or sliced or an injector hold down worked loose causing fuel to go straight into the cylinder.what will happen next is you will hydro lock the cylinder what has happened is a warning sign for what is worse to come so stop and fix the problem if not it will cost you a motor i assure you.

if you are doing the work remove the valve covers and visually check the injector hold downs if they are not loose start pulling injectors one at a time and you will fined which one is the cause.when you pull the injector look at the two o rings on the injector for nicks or maybe cut into no telling.when replacing the o rings take some oil and rub on the o rings and place the inje ctor back in the hole.start with rachet and slowly tighten it down till you can not tighten.then take tq wrench and tq down to 27ft lbs oh and be sure to blow out the hold down holes. hopes this helps you.i also have a fresh studded motor if interested.

thanks for the reply. are you prett confident that it's the injector, and not glow plug related or stiction?
I am still learning this powertrain.

Also, what could have caused this, as it didn't arise until after tuning. She started perfect until I loaded the tune.

is it possible it's tune related, or is this purely mechanical? tempted to load the stock file and test her tomorrow, but worried it might flood the cylinder and hydrolock

You need to check those injector o-rings first. A hydrolocked cylinder can bend a rod.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge ? Once it starts does fuel pressure bounce? When I lost a copper crush washer then an oring it rolled white like I've never seen and fuel pressure was bouncing as compression from the cylinder fed back into my system ( and took out 3 other injector nozzles ) when I shut it off it hydro locked within seconds !
