VGT Solinoid failure?

Has anyone experienced this? I am starting to think that mine is going in and out. I have an intermittent throttle response problem, with varying symptoms. I think that it is cutting in and out, and hanging up in different places. I just cleaned the turbine side and replaced the unison ring a few weeks back trying to fix this problem. Saturday it ran perfect, but today It had no power at any more than 1/3 throttle. It seems to me as I said that it changes, but I think the problem I have is when I try to goose the throttle the vanes are hung up and cant effectively build boost quick enough for proper throttle response. Does this seem viable? has anyone had a solenoid fail? what were the symptoms?

Thanks,

Eric

Re: VGT Solinoid failure?

I've seen a lot of 6.0's over the years and have never seen a VGT solenoid fail yet. Look at EBP with KOEO and see what you have then KOER and see what you have.

Re: VGT Solinoid failure?

I have pretty much confirmed the solenoid is to blame either its contaminated or failing. the problem is intermittent, and currently isn't happening at all but could go to stuck forever any day now. I don't know the cause of the failure. I just know I checked my ebp voltage and its good. The sensor was replaced, as was the unison ring and I checked for other issues that could cause this power loss. I mean no disrespect and I don't claim to be an expert, and for all I know I could be wrong, But I have spent two months chasing this and reading and so on and this is the most logical thing I have found yet. I am replacing the solenoid, updating the feed line, and splicing in a new pigtail tomorrow. The old pigtail is very brittle and missing one tab already. the solenoid could be fine and possible be jammed with rubber or screening from somewhere in the oil system, but I got a good deal on the parts and they are in hand so I am going to replace them and see if the problem comes back. Like I said the truck Is running great right now, but could start back up being a creme puff at any moment.

Thanks for the input,

Eric

Re: VGT Solinoid failure?

I have pretty much confirmed the solenoid is to blame

How did you confirm this?
The connector for the VGT solenoid is the same as a 7.3 injector, 7.3 or 6.0 IPR, the connector wire the wire clip is much better than the plastic lock tabs.

Re: VGT Solinoid failure?

I am not to proud to admit I was wrong. The thing that seemed to actually fix the problem was the VGT relearn. I woln't change anything back, as everything is working beautifully. And yes the wire is much stronger, but I am A bit OCD about that Kind of stuff and things not looking Jerry rigged. Its more for me than anything else to have the regular plug in there. Anyway it is all better now, and I Have to go correct one of my other posts.

Thank you toolmangary.

Re: VGT Solinoid failure?

How did you do the VGT relearn? what type of scanner has that in it? I've never noticed that in any of the scanners I have.

Re: VGT Solinoid failure?

It's not scanner based. Do a search for it. Lots of write ups. Basically you turn headlights on, unhook batteries, touch negative to positive cables, let sit for 10 mins to clear memory, hook batteries back up, crank and let idle for 10 mins, shut off for a few, then crank back up and gradually go through progressively harder accelerations like you would doing a trans relearn. That's the simplified version of course.

Re: VGT Solinoid failure?

Ok I get what your doing. My scanner has a function to clear KAM (keep alive memory), and there is nothing in it that specifically says VGT relearn. So when I clear KAM it's doing the same thing as disconnecting the batteries.
