Turbo surge

Replaced my turbo over the weekend with a used unit. Pulled it apart and cleaned it, previous owner had taken it apart and applied antisieze, but went a little overboard so I cleaned most of that up while cleaning. Got it installed and went up the road. Immediately started surging 2-4psi when accelerating. Just cruising (below 10psi) it doesn't do it. Stopped and changed the tune, and the surging stopped. Figured it was just the tune...never surged again that day. Get in today for work..first time it's been driven since the day of install, and it's surging again. I've driven 40 miles and it's still doing it. You can hear it spoiling up and down, and feel it as well. I'm thinking vgt solenoid, but don't have the laptop with me to watch the numbers. Why do y'all think? Just seems weird it stopped all of a sudden the other day when I shut the truck off. This solenoid was on the turbo when I bought it, and I have my old one at home. But, none of that does me any good as I'm 40-50 miles from the house where that and AE is!

I know I can get definite answers by hooking up AE, but I won't be home til late tonight, and just wanted to hear some opinions before I got a chance to look at the PID's.

Re: Turbo surge

Just went through this with my 06' and after using AE (which showed nothing ) and
lots of analyzing it was the solenoid (VGT). In the process I found a simple test from
another gentlmen , With the truck up to full temp pull over and unhook the EBP sensor
and continue driving. If the problem still exists 99% of the time it's the Vgt solenoid .
This was the case on our 06'. Changed the solenoid and it runs great now!

Re: Turbo surge

Good deal. Might have to try that on the ride home this evening.

Re: Turbo surge

By the way I wasn't bashing AE as it's an invaluable tool . What I should have said is that
the readings where correct (%'s VGT etc ) and when we activated the solenoid thru the
software it seemed fine . Apparently running, the signal was proper from the PCM and it would build boost but the veins where always out of position (late reacting ) . It took a while to figure this one out , until I received the test info from another tech .
Once you know this trick it's a 2 minute fix !

Re: Turbo surge

Problem solved. Didn't try your trick but when I got home I swapped my old solenoid in and took a ride. A couple burnt fingers and about 10 mins later and it's fixed. Glad too...that surging chit about drove me crazy starting and stopping at every traffic light.

Re: Turbo surge

I figured duty cycle would have been bouncing all over the place. That's what I would have been looking at if I had the laptop with me today anyways. Oh well.
