I'm going with Icon 4" springs up front and I want to replace the rear springs also, but with something better than stock, better ride and wheel travel. I was thinking Icon 5"ers but that would put me ass high but by only an inch. I'm thinking that with a CCSB it wouldn't look that bad plus when I tow I wont be as nose high as if it were level. Or should I go with a custom set of Deavers to match the front 4 inches. Or I could bring the front up an additional 1" but I dont know how to do that other than a spacer/block, and I've alvays been taught NEVER put a Spacer/block up front. I could weld on a new sping perch thats an inch higher too. I'm going to run 315/75/16 Goodyear Duratracs, and I think 4" lift looks just right and 5" and 35"s might look off.
Please let me know what you're thouts are and post up some pics if you have a similar suspension setup, especially if there is someone in the pic for size referance/scale.
Here are a few pics of other members with similar lift/tire size I've found.
This is an 05 or 06...? with Icon 5" spings out back and 4.5" coils up front.
This is a 2000 with 6" lift and 35"s. I think it sits too high for the tires. It would look good with 37"s but I still need to tow a GN and not drain the savings with the cost of 37"s.
BTW this truck is the same year, color, and configuration as mine.
And these are the same wheel/tire combo I'm going with, PC'd stock Alcoas and Duratracs
What about '08 springs!? They should provide more travel, softer ride, and I've seen a few used sets that sell for cheap compared to Icons or Deavers and I could fab up a front hanger similar to PMF's unit. It would be stronger than relocating the front hanger and a fraction of the cost of buying them.
Thanks Tx Fireman and Tarm! answered alot of my question w/o even responding. I searched for hours through this site and the 08 sping topic never came up till I was looking at traction bars. I even fallowed that tread
So my questions now are;
* what spings will give me better off road performance w/o sacrificing towing capibilities, Icon 5" or '08's?
*If I go with '08 springs should I go with or w/o the overload spring?
*there wouldn't be a height/ride quality differance with and w/o overload springs, right?
I'm open to other options too, let me know what you think would work best.
Thanks
Rick
Just as many '08 owners complane about their springs as earlyer years.
IMO want the best riding lift..4.5" hangers with stock V codes front. rear add 5" Icons..dial in the rear height by removing 1 of the small bottom leafs. PM me if I can help..
What kind of complaints ? The question I’m asking is, 08’s better than 99-04’s and better than Icon 5”?
I’m not just wanting a better ride and lift, but wanting more articulation, and travel for off road capabilities. I was originally thinking of going that rout but I need new springs and didn't want to buy springs and a hanger set up. The cost would be several hundred dollars more and provide nothing more than additional height over a stock setup. Plus Icons warrant y against sagging, and oem’s love to sag! As for pulling a leaf out of the 5” Icons, I never really liked that Idea. It’ll likely have a negative effect on the “R&D’d” tune of the springs. Like guys cutting a coil to lower their rides. I will defiantly will keep new springs and hangers as an option.
Removing the 2 lowest leafs should have no effect on the ride. They provide additional lift. Even the 3rd smallest could be removed, unless you are jumping off dunes, where that one will aid when maximum compression is reached.
As to towing, airbags are your best option. When unloaded, you get the best ride, and as the load increases, add air as required.
I recently put stock 08 springs on the back of my truck then I went to Carli Suspension and got a set of there 08+ 6 leaf mini pack. That raised the truck up about 2". That along with your stock block should put you at close to level if you have an F250. I talked to Sage and Deaver about removing the lowest leaf to lower the rear just alittle but they suggested I didn't. All the leafs were made a curtain length to give them the same distance from leaf to leaf. I am not sure about the actual amount of travel but the 08's should give you more being that they are longer. I never checked that before I switched them out. As for air bags, I dont care what people think but they do not give you a better ride while empty. I have a set because I tow a heavy 5th wheel. They do great with handling and bringing the rear up when I tow the trailer but are horrible while empty. (on a side note, they felt better with my 08 springs and 40# then they did with my 05 spings and any amount of air I put in them). I ended up taking them off for now. I will put them back on when I am towing my trailer but am thinking of the Carli Longtravel Air Bags. The airbags will limit your travel or rip if you extend them too much.
As for the overload springs, they shouldn't make a difference in ride heights because they are not used until you put weight in the truck.
I would say they are totally different. I just put a 4" spring lift on my buddies truck and Deaver 5" all spring in the rear. It does sit 1" higher in back now. Thinking of a lowering shackle in the rear or a lift shackle in the front to level it. I know they say you are to lower both sides of the front springs with hanger/shackles but it is only a 2" longer shackle to get 1" of lift. I know a few that have it this way and the driveline angle is not bad at all.
This is the thread I started on my buddies truck. Need to get pictures of it with the 5" rear Deavers on it. New lift on buddies truck - PowerStrokeNation
Yeah I thought they would be but I was wanting to make sure before I shelled out the big $ for their bushings. I got a lightly used 4" Icon lift for a smoking deal but a couple of the bushings got jacked up. I wasn't planning on going with used springs the deal was well worth it even if I have to get the Icon bushings. I also picked up a set of Mickey Thompson 16"x10"wheels for a great price. I didn't want to get away from the hubcentric wheels but I needed a wider than stock wheel for the 315 tires and almost no one makes h/c wheels. So I will machine up a set of hubcentric rings to transfure the load to the hubs, maybe even extend them out from the wheel overr the hubs, and make some kind of cap to replace the crappy MT ones. I just ordered the tires and I need to pollish and powder coat the wheels and pc some suspension pices before I tear things apart. I think I'll wait till fall to replace the rear springs eather with '08+, Deavers, Alcan's, or Icon. I still need to look more into it.
I run 4" Icon leafs with a 3" hanger & shackle in the front. Out back is 5" leafs with a 1" block, and the truck sits a tad ass high (1/2")
