Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket upgrade to replace fords pre-bled slave/master cylinder plastic unit? Im on my second one in 90,000 miles they are not well made and mostly plastic!
I have read threw many posts and this seems to be a problem area on the zf6's
Thanks
I'm not aware of any aftermarket "upgrade" clutch hydraulic systems or parts.
The factory parts were made by Sachs and replacements are pretty easy to find. You don't need to buy a pre-bled system you can get just a master, slave or hydraulic line if that's all you need.
I have an aftermarket clutch and found the factory black nylon hydraulic line didn't like city driving and heat (despite Ford using two layers of heat shielding) so I made my own stainless braided teflon line ... the clutch action is more consistant now.
I've found that flushing and replacing the brake fluid every year helps also.
no, and they are #### plastic. I keep a full replacement in the tool box. My dual disc clutch likes to eat them. And they are alot of fun when working the clutch in bumper to bumper traffic and it blows. I've never had the Line blow, just the master mostly and a few slaves.
Thanks for the info Ill have to fab up something for the line so fluid can be changed and system can be bleed. maybe that will help the rest of the units components last longer??
No problems per say the damn things just up and fail all of sudden. No warning pedal to the floor!
My truck only has 90,000 miles its a 2001 i dont tow very often.
It failed when the truck was brand new ~5,000 miles
It failed in september I was on my way home from idaho towing my grandfathers burrow and pedal to the floor in sacramento traffic...i live in norcal so I still had 3 hours to get home I made it though.
that one lasted ~85,000 miles ............. plus it had two trips to Alaska on it and i towed a car hauler both times!
My little dealer actually had one in stock so got it and installed it and everything is working great so far. I just hope to get another 85000 out of this one.
I had to replace a seal so while i was under their i did a new clutch, before the idaho trip, and I think thats what pushed the slave unit over the edge.
i would never get rid of my 6 speed!!!! the slave thing is the only negative about it imo. my dad had the 4r100 in his and they gave him a new tranny within 4k and hes had a couple expensive problems since. no thank you lol
If you actually made power, and wanted to shift even remotely swiftly without replacing syncros on each oil change, you would be singing a different tune.
it makes plenty of power for a DD so i will survive. i dont plan on over 500. 400-450 is my mark and I'm almost there. Plus the short throw shifter quickens the shifts up real nice.
I don't know what you're running, but the BD short throw shifter I had was 100% junk... Best the ZF6 ever shifted was the day I took that back off, threw it on the ground and re-installed the factory unit.
And I said, sub 500rwhp, the ZF6 is okay. Still nowhere near what a 4R100 can and will do though.
Just don't ever drive a full manual 4R100 truck and you can continue on in blissful ignorance of your struggle.
midwest shifter..it outperforms stock by leaps and bounds.
My 2001 is for working, towing and fun not sled pulling. Thats what my 2000 350 is for and its running a 4r100 that cost me fortune to build up to handle over 500hp.
For the average guy with moderate power mods which is a VERY large portion of this forum the stock zf6 will last longer and hold up way better than any stock 4r100. Crazy HP #'s is a different ballgame and a built 4r100 is better suited, but crazy HP #'s was something I was NEVER talking or thinking about with my zf6...................
And this is why 99% of the time I just read the forums everything always turns into a pissin match of opinions.
Sorry for waking a dead thread I know this is a old thread but this one comes up a lot for google search and for any one out there please check ford service bulletin 95-4-9
It was a known issue by ford just never recalled the slave cylinders fail at an outragous rate. Upgrade is best option.
Replacing these parts essentially gives you the super duty clutch from that year which also have a bleeder screw on the slave cylinder
