Ok im gettin sick of puttin part after part into my truck. Should i just get another motor or rebuild the one i have. And if i get a new one theres a place called the horsepower shop that has the black mamba 7.3s. does anyone know about these or has anyone worked with them?
Those are the ebay special motors. Don't waste your time. There is nothing special about them other than the spewing of lies they are telling when advertising them.
I have actually talked to the owner of that shop. He was a great guy to talk to. I let him know that his HP numbers were a bit off and tried to interest him in joining here but I guess he didn't feel the need to.
I wouldn't be so quick to knock the motors though. Yah they don't make the claimed 4-500 hp, we all know that. But they could have potential.
I would bet that if you could talk them into selling the motor minus injectors, turbo, hpop, pushrods, and valve springs you'd have a heck of a motor to build off of.
You would get a fresh rebuild as good or better than OEM, forged rods, Mahle pistons, clevite bearing, all the gaskets, head studs, main studs, new lpop, fluid damper, etc etc.
Put on your turbo, injectors, and hpop and you're good to go. That's my .02:lookaround:
I would rather just rebuild the one I had and then add performance parts of my choosing to it rather than buy an engine and not really know where it came from, who worked on it, or what is really done to it.
Exactly what I just finished doing. Just pull it yourself and have the machine work done and put it back in. The money you save can be spent on upgrades. I took a long block to the machine shop and got one cylinder sleeved and all bored 20 over. Long block back to me for $3k.
why don't we start with WHY you feel that you need a new engine..... You said you were tired of throwing parts at your truck.... a new engine won't fix that unless those parts are crankshafts, pistons, rods, etc.
I am currently looking for a used builder block. My plan is to just build it, and moth ball it until mine windows or wears out. Swap all the goodies over and carry on.
The reason im lookin at a new motor is cause the one thats in it was beat to crap before i bought it so idk what all is goin on with pistons, camsahft, rods etc. I have no clue what all is gonna go on with it next as far as problems. So i was tryin to decide if i wanna go with a new motor from ford or the black mamba from the horsepower shop. I know it prolly doesnt get the hp numbers they claim it gets but as long as its a reliable motor with a good warranty. Plus i wanna replace all the other parts as well. turbo, fuel system, basically i wanna take the whole motor out thats in it now and start all over and build from the block up, everything new. Or get a crate motor and everything else new from there.
A black mamba is high dollar. Why would you buy one and then tear it apart again? Those, imo, are for people that don't want to build their own. I would just totally rebuild the one you have now. Or buy a high mileage engine and rebuild it and then build it up.
Im not gonna tear it apart again if i get the black mamba but if i rebuild mine im gonna start from the bare block. I looked and they wanted $5,995 for the black mamba and from ford if i remember correctly it was a little more than that.
Ok. thanks for the input everyone. Im tryin to get some ideas right now and tryin to go with a fairly good money saving route seein as im a little tight with money right now but i need to get my truck done so im dont keep throwin money at it. thats what got me in the tight money situation i am in. But i need the truck runnin.
I had a running motor out of a donor truck that I put on here/ebay/craigslist several times with absolutely no interest. Not until I tried to derail several other guys threads regarding selling their motors (sorry about that) did I finally get a response. And that was only because I threatened to take mine to the recycle yard and sell it for scrap.
So I have a someone coming to pick up my complete running 7.3 for $350 next weekend. And it took me six months to find someone to do even that. So there is plenty of good blocks out there. If I was getting fed up with my truck and was considering all new under the hood, picking one of these up and building it up would be good fun. And I know I would learn a lot in the process. And I think that is even more fun. And practical too!
Everything is wrong with it now haha. It runs but it has an attitude problem. One day i can go around the block as many times as i want and the next itll idle fine but shut down on me and pour white smoke as its shut down and another day itll shut off on me while its idleing. And ive had many other problems with it before this too. Its just too much of a pain so im gonna go with everything new under the hood. From what everyone is sayin i think im gonna go with either rebuilding my block or gettin another block and totally rebuildin that one. Ill prolly just go with my block tho.
Or if you want to REALLY learn, Lets wipe the slate clean and start with your symptoms... Describe what the truck does, when, and for how long. Be prepared to spend a few hundred on tools and lets get you lined out.
First lets start with starting the truck. It cranks a bit before it finally starts. Then once its started, on its bad days it will shut off on me while its idleing. But i will crank it again for a bit and it will start up again. And then the days it idles just fine i will hold the pedal at around 2000 rpms and it will slowly shut off on me. If i hold it below 2000 its fine. But then on on the days it idles fine i will take it out and go down the road not even a quarter mile and itll slowly shut down on me. And if i hold the pedal down while it slowly shuts down on me it pours white smoke. After it shuts down ill start it up again and go a little farther and it does it again. So it starts after every time this happens but it just wont let me go anywhere. Maybe one day out of 5 it wont do this and i can go around the block all i want and nothing will happen, it runs fine.
I checked the exhaust back pressure sensor and thats fine. I checked for codes and nothin. I did an oil change when i changed the oil cooler and it started havin this problem a couple weeks after i changed that. I also changed the fuel filter when i changed the oil and i used rotella 15w-40. It does it no matter how much fuel is in it. I also do have an oil leak on the back of the motor somewhere its running all down the down pipe and back my exhaust.
The fleet trucks were ford. Yea itd be quite the drive and the stupid thing would have to make it there first haha
