has anyone done this conversion or know what it would take to do it? im super interested in this and think it would make a great motor for a sled puller! thanx for the input!:ford:
If you're crafty with sheetmetal work, go for the 466. You will likely only be able to run in exhibition. Just like the one on youtube. I had started a 466 swap in a SD, but had to bail on it. A SD is the best donor body, since it has the most room, but will still need half the firewall & half the floor moved. You wont be able to remove the valve cover without lifting up the cab, unless the radiator is in the bed.
The 466 will, but the 360 wouldnt need all the firewall mods. If it's just a sled puller, then more cubes will be that much better. Unless there's a limit on engine size. The 466 will go back into the firewall at least 3.5", depending on how close you want the radiator.
Thats not correct. It all depends what class you pull in. Most classes require that the engine came in a 1ton or less, but theres also open and unlimited classes that allow the 466. If you go on you tube theres a few videos around of guys runnin the 466
I've only seen 1 before in person & my research on them turns up limited results. It was made to replace the 360 but then the T444E 7.3L came along & they didn't see a reason to have a 408 & a 466 so they scrapped the 408.
If you dont mind used stuff, there's plenty on the classifieds at pulloff's website. It is mind boggling what you can get from a Kornbinder. Keeping it street driveable may be a little trickier than all out competition. A 360 would sure fit better. True, there wasn't a lot of 408's made, but it may be a way around some rules. Of course, once they see it, they may make new rules.
I am building a more budget form of this set up, but I do not sled pull. I drag, so the rules allow this. The pump is the most expensive part, but it is for the Cummins as well.
It's a small price to pay for the miles of smiles a good pump provides.
