Hello, been reading on this site for a month or so but this is my first post.
To start off I recently bought an 01 extended cab short box with the 7.3 and auto. The Chassis has 371,000 miles but the motor has about 100,000 on it and tranny was rebuilt 5,000 miles ago. I picked it up for 5800 bucks.
Anyway, to my problem, I was experiencing a vibration while cruising above 50 mph and applying very light throttle. I looked under the truck and noticed the pinion seal was leaking so Crawled under the truck and felt some lateral play in the pinion. From this I assume I have a bearing out and pull my truck into my shop, take the box off (I intend on doing the Hutch mod) and pull the rear end apart only to find that all of the bearings and races are in good shape, no wear or broken parts. I had taken the fill plug out prior to taking it apart and there was a metal chunk stuck to it, also the ends of the ring gear are somewhat chewed up like something has been rattling around.
Anyone have any ideas as to why my pinion had play but my bearings look good? Or where The metal chunk came from? I have pictures and if I can figure out how ill post them up. Thanks, (sorry for the long post, wanted to be as descriptive as possible)
