I'm wanting to go with a ported enclosure. JL recomends .35 cu.ft. with a 2" diameter x 18" long port.
Easy enough I guess....build the whole thing so each driver is in it's own ported enclosure? Or...one big chamber with one big port? 4 small ports?
I've never built a multiple driver ported enclosure before....so I'm not sure at all what's best.
I actually have .46 cu.ft. each to work with.
That's an angled enclosure 61' W x 17" T x 6.5" D (bottom) and 3" D (top)....minus 3/4" material to come up with the internal volume of .46.
Obviously I can play with that to get down to JL's recomended size but should I or should I use all the space I have and adjust port size accordingly?
If so...how do I figure out what the new port size and length should be?
I have no idea how to use the modeling softwares that are out there....any hints or direction would be nice.
no idea...I'm sure a stereo guru has a program to figure it out....and they'll be able to figure out how much air space each woofer takes up too...can't forget to figure that in.
I prefer hard hitting bass as well...and with enough power...you can make a 8 sound like a 10
There are differing opinions on shared vs autonomous enclosures. My opinion is that if the space is available, keep them autonomous (as long as they are exactly the same size and shape). If not, then one shared enclosure is the safe bet. Sound should not be too much different, but I think crisper sound comes from an autonomous set up. You can change the shape of the vent as well if need be, as long as surface area stays the same and you do not go too small, otherwise you get port noise.
I think I wanna do 4 independent enclosures and use those Aeroport's.
Getting them all the same size on a simple angled truck box will be easy...no worries there.
I can't modely anything either but is that 0.46 net volume? Or is that after subtracting woofer displacement (probably negligible on those 8's) and port displacement? Plus if you do individual encloseures in the 1 box, you'll need to subtract out the volume of the 3/4" dividers. I'm thinking your 0.46 will be spot on once you break it down with everything.
For figuring the aero ports this calculator should help you, Products Menu
Looking forward to the build!!
Not sure if it is any help but I was bored and figured I would look into things... Seems even the 8's are going to be VERY tight in that box, maybe even need a bit of a relief along the back wall to allow for the magnet to clear.
This was with your external dimensions, and the dimensions of the 8w3 off JL's site,
I've been thinking of doing the same. I had a friend build me a box for my truck that holds 3 - 8" kicker L7's. Its one big sealed enclosure and subs aren't divided, sounds good to me. I'm not a sterio guy at all, just subscribing to see your outcome.
I know it'll be tight....seriously thinking about just farming out the box build to someone local. Give them my max dimensions and let them figure it out. LOL
If you do a divided box, they all have to be the same size and shape or it will make a difference. I have always been a fan of JL 8's in sets of 3. Dunno why but I have had a coupe systems that sets of 3 sounded amazing and 4 didnt.
For 3 svc subs they would have to be 8 ohm drivers and would show a 2.7 ohm load to the amp.
4 4 ohm svc drivers will show a 4 ohm load.
My sub amp is 750 watts clean at 4 ohm. That's right in the sweet spot for the 8W3v3's when the power is split up between voic coils. Plus the amp stays cool and healthy at an easy 4 ohm load.
I would do a common ported chamber, with the box size you gave with 3/4MDF that works out to a Gross Vol 1.76. With two 3" ports that are 20" it tunes to 33.88HZ. With 15" ports it would raise tuning to 37.63HZ. Both have a port area of 14.13in which would work fine. With woofer and port displacement it is a net volume of 1.44.
I say do it it will sound good.
Agreed. Seperate enclosures are only needed if running 2 seperate amps... i.e. one amp for each pair for ex. common ported is fine. the internal port displacement is the key here. As well as the length of the port itself.
What amp are you going to run exactly?
Probably a JL Slash 1000/1 running all 4.
4 svc 4 ohm drivers
At the recommended enclosure volume a 2" diameter port 18" long tunes it to 31hz....obviously in individual enclosures.
Going with a common enclosure for all 4 is where I run out of knowledge for port diameter and length and how it changes.
I'm not sure if you have local guys or what but Jim (jimdawg) did one for us yesterday. He is top notch with this stuff and a perfectionist as it looks like you are rich. I'd recommend him to anyone.
he's on my list to contact after I look at a few local poses and check out what Garretts place did in his truck. Shipping is my only concern...both cost and potential damage.
I may need to get up with him and have him look at my truck and see if he has any ideas. For a system.shops around here suck, and that's putting it nicely
If you change the length of the port, you will change its tuning.
I would love to see a box with the Cummins C as the port. Maybe a brushed aluminum face that matches your emblems and the subs inset.
