Who is running these new turbos and with what size injectors? It appears that the GTX4294r will spool quicker. I am looking for a great turbo to replace my GT38r but not loose the response, and be able to tow with it.
I see everyone is useing 300cc w 200% nozzles. I have searched and i think they are useing the gt4202. i know the GT4202r is bigger then the GT4294r and that the new design helps with the spooling down low. Where does it light up 1800 RPM?
I am looking for something that i can get 550-600hp and be able to tow decent 10k with no issues. I know its all in the tuning. Just looking for real life experiance to save time and money.
This would be for my Dalily driver, so what are we looking at MPG? Would 250CC 200% be better?
It's a good question and I'd love to know the answer myself.
My 4202R gives pretty significant barks (momentary surges) at part throttle operation and I've often wondered if that was a sign that it was running too close to the surge line and therefore was not an appropriate fit. Unfortunately I don't know enough about it to call it either way.
My feeling is that either would work great but based on totally subjective reports I feel the 94X might be a better fit.
I spoke with Dave Lott and he said that the GTX4294r spools like the 38r and moves the air up top like the GT4202r. Sudggested 250cc 200% that it should be plenty with minimal smoke.

I've run a stock 4294R, and now run a modded 4294R w a 1.15 and conservative 250/80s. I really like the combo. It lites fast, and builds quickly all the way to 55#. drive pressure doesn't pass boost until about 40#.
Since I've run both the R and the modded (X), I can say that there is a noticeable difference between the two.
The R felt great, and I was pretty happy, but it was a bit slow to lite in normal driving conditions (traffic on the freeway and stop/go). The X definitely lites quicker and is easier to drive in those conditions. It will build boost quicker and make more on top.
To be honest, I am so happy w the 4294, that I'm thinking about trying a 4202X now.
Here is a link to a thread I posted a while back comparing the R and the X along w some videos. Videos are on the 5th page of the 2nd thread.
I think he is reffering to the new gt42s with the "x" wheels in them that flow a good bit more of air, so you can have an even quicker spool up from a 4294 but get similar air flow to a 4202,
HOWEVER i think your truck is a perfect example that with good tuning and the right set up it can make great power fuel only, and still be a daily driver/ work truck.
We literally just finished mounting my GTX4294R today. I went with it based on the maps and what I had seen of the 94 and 02 version already. I really wanted my cake and to eat it as well. From what I found (was told) with a 1.15 housing this was it. Will light down low and spool close to a 38R and up top actually should flow a bit more than a 4202r.
470cc 200% nozzles (a little room to grow LOL) Nate did all his extra magic i.e. fuel side mods etc.
Matt @ gearhead does all my tuning.
Hopefully I should have it all done by the end of the week. The fuel system and Dual Stealth HPOP still need to be installed.
I have always felt the GT42 series turbos are a ideal balance for the 7.3. You have all your driveabilty and a ton of top end power.
Thug, that's like 5x more smoke than I have. I have nothing like that. The smoke you had at third track is the worst I can make mine smoke if I just stomp on it and I'm completely under the turbo. I'm still trying to find a dyno event in the area to see if I have the power numbers you have. I suspect you have me by 50 hp or so. I feel there is a few hard to correct problems w/ my set up that are a bit limiting.
How are you even launching that thing? You are 2 wheel drive right? Right now it's cold outside and I can't even give my truck more than 1/2 throttle w/o it just killing the 35s (w/ locker and traction bars) at anything below 15-20 mph. Sometimes I left off and try to get going again at 30 mph or so and it just spins again.
Wizard, I know where you are going w/ this but since we can easily get more fuel (and therefore smoke) w/ programming I'm not certain of the point. Anyways, my injectors are just plain ole Hybrids w/ no internal mods short of stroking and nozzles but I'm willing to try some injector mods once I'm convinced they are worthy.
Thug, what is your power difference between your street and race tune? I have no doubt that it kills on the street.
My injectors are 250/200 with oil side mods. Just reading and seeing what others are putting down with larger injectors I am very happy with these bad boys.
Fired it up to get the air out of the lines and rails after everything under the VC was done. Then again to check the turbo and pipes for leaks. I then had torn into the fuel system and still have to drop the tank and do the PU to finish it. I guess I could throw the lines into a 5 gal bucket full of #2 just to fire it up to clear the HPOPs. I was not thinking and had a 3/4 full tank when I started this so I am stuck draining a ton of #2. Excursions have a 45 gal tank:doh:.
Few small mods still left. Cut/mod intercooler hot side pipe. Need another 4" v-band(miscounted). Small piece of 4" pipe to finish the exhaust. 5" 45 degree pipe for the air intake. Then we will see if the stock boots will hold at all. If not some big rig coolant hose will address the issue and allow for double clamping if needed.
But it is soooo damn COLD out and super windy I am hoping to get a day without the wind to finish. I can not get the door down and have enough room to work in front of the X so I had heavy mil plastic stapled over to cover the open door but still with a propane and electric heater going its barely into the 30s.
After a short break the suspension, tires, and gears will be next to go on.
well, bring that up to illinois where im at, and we can pull it into my dads shop for a weekend. 48x60 heated to a nice 60*. full tools, and a torch so we can finally put that stack through the hood your x. we can knock out quite a bit in a couple days if you aint bundled up like a friggin eskimo.
After what we went thru this last week with temps into the teens that woudl honestly be an option. LOL It was sooo damn cold out there. You can not work all bundled up so cold it is.....
How far of a drive is it to that shop from Va!?! LOL
Seriously I may be begging Marty as I do not think his place is to far. Maybe 1.5-2 hours. If my damn garage was only 6' deeper it would be perfect. It has a 9' door height so that nice at least.

Been there done that, have the sweater If it's cold enough to see your breath, then there will be shortcuts and mistakes Raise the temp 20 deg so you can feel your fingers, and remember the project fondly!
Good luck, and wish you a warm work place...following your project.
oh and it does suck working in that freezing cold weather. Hope everything works well for you and can't wait to hear that thing run. Good luck buddy
And remember its all good
Ha see your breath was when it was the warmest. More like ice crystals on my goatee. The snow actually warmed things up a bit as it had some insulting factors. Now that is sad. Then there was the icing on the cake when I crawled under the truck to work on the fuel system and put my head in a big puddle of 10-12 F degree diesel fuel. At least it was not gasoline or when I went next to the propane heater I would have been really warm really fast with a whole new set of issues.
HOW DOES THE GTX4294-GTX4202-42R COMPARE TO THE KASB SET UP FROM ***? IN THE SAME BOAT FOR TRYING TO MAKE 600HP AND PULL 10K. GOT B CODES SET UP FROM DAVID WITH 100%, FULL BUILT MOTOR FLOWED HEADS JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT TURBO?
