Ok, so im wondering what gearing with what size tires your running. What type of roads you drive. Do you tow etc...
I have 37/13.50 with 3.73, I live way in the country speed limit is mostly 40 to 55. very little 70 thinking of going 4.30 whats your opions. Have you changed your gearing and regreting it etc...

in a 6 speed? downshift..

I would not even think of putting 4.10's on a 7.3 6spd with only 35's, MAYBE if was an auto.

To the OP, regearing is not cheap and I think the 3.73's are fine until you go 38"+ tires. I first had 38's with 4.56's. That sucked for any sort of highway driving, revved way too high. Went to 4.30's and wished I had went to 4.11 or 3.73 instead because it still ran too high rpm for my liking. Went to 40" tires and the 4.30's and it was a little better, but 4.11's probably would have been better with that size tires, for me. I didn't tow with this truck FWIW

3.73 or 4.10... NO BIGGER...

I regret changing the gears to 4.30's...

Only thing I gained was a bit lower EGT's

with 37s I would stick with the 3.73 gears. like already stated, at most I would do 4.10s. With 4.30 gears on 37s at 1500 rpms in OD you would be at 54mph. I have towed a car trailer loaded plenty of times with 37s and 38s with my 3.73 gears.

i think its more on personnal opinion, i ran 4.56's with 38's and it worked awesome, it was geared like factory 3.73 and 31's. if your going to spend the money i would change to something that will make it worth your while, going to 4.10 wouldnt be worth the time or money imo.

Yea I think I have pinioin bearing going out on my truck and was thinking of going ahead and regearing it. But i love how its not screaming at 60 or so. I'm going to try to do some more inspection tomorrow and see if i can find whats the deal. Probaly going to stick with the 3.73

or find a set of axles with 4.10's. the bigger the tire means more rotating mass which is harder on all of your running gear, r&p, bearing, u joints, transmission, etc... front unit bearings, powersteering pump, tie rods, i love the bigger tire but at 60 i was at 1750 and 70 at 2000rpm which is like stock. think it was a little low geared for highway if you were to run 75, 80 or faster but you couldnt beat it on the back roads and up the hills, trans liked it alot better too, just some insight on the regearing cause i did it and liked it alot

on the other note i sold all of it and went down to 35's and going to run 4.10's just cause its easier on everything,

did you already go down to the 35's? i already went down to 35's from 38's now im contemplating going down to a 4" lift but not sure how thats gonna look. im leaning more towards the 6" lift but not sure its worth spending the $$ for a mere 2" drop from what i have now which is an 8" lift.

For the OP, i regeared my truck also, i still have 4.56 running it now with the 35's, i dont mind it much. as long as you dont like doing 90 mph the higher gears is a great improvement...EXCELLENT TORQUE!

4.56 with 38s is only 1 mph dif @ 2000 RPM versus stock 31 and 3.73.

But you also have 75lb per wheel of add rotating weight and mass 300lbs. That takes HP.

I am figuring about 100HP loss in power to the ground and acceleration going to my 40x14.5x20 on 20x12 with 4.56 compared to stock. Figured I would come in around 600 so it will drive it has 500.

Just not to fast and not to long before you need to stop at the pump. LOL

LOL How about running some 60" tall tires and put it in 4low with the hubs unlocked, would that be the same as 30" with a 3.73?:poke:LOL.

It's a joke guys, it's a joke.:evil

Went from 35s with 3.73 to 37s with 4.10. Much nicer to drive now, and egts are lower, all things being equal. With the 35s I had to start off in Low if I wanted to have a no smoke get-away from a traffic light. With the setup now I can use 1st gear.

Since it's an automatic, I'd consider a re-gear, but it would be better to simply adapt your driving style. I know the 7.3s are a totally different animal from the 6.0s, but a 4r100 is a 4r100, and if you lug it hard enough long enough, you'll pay for it in the lifespan of the transmission. Ideally, you want to turn just slightly more rpm than you make peak torque at the speed you'd pull your heaviest load, and again, ideally you don't want to pull a load in overdrive.

So with a 7.3 making peak torque around 1600rpm, you'd want to gear for pulling a load at 1700-1800rpm. With your 37s, and as you're geared with 3.73s now, you're actually fine, as long as you hold in 3rd towing. Right now, 55mph is a mere 1850rpm in 3rd, and 70mph is only 2350rpm. If you want those rpm in OD, you'd need 5.14s!

I run 35s with 3.73s on my 6.0/6-speed and what I've found is that 4th (1:1) I turn the same RPM as my buddies 4.30 geared 6.0/5r110 Tow-Boss on 245/75-17s, but when I push it into OD I drop 600rpm off him. I have not found anything I didn't feel my truck could handle with my setup that I couldn't handle by simply shifting gears.

On the other hand, my Excursion has a V10/4r100/4.30 combo on 285/75-16s and I'd do a Gear Vendor before I re-geared, because that thing would be a dog without the 4.30s.
