i just bought a 02 powerstroke it has a 6'' skyjacker lift 20''s and 35's new ball joints new 1'' trac bar the tires wear even it drives straight as an arrow when u take your hands off the wheel but if you hit a bump in the road or brake hard or eveen just let off the throttle the truck is all over the road to the point where its dangerous. and the steering feels sloppy causing you to over compensate when u do try to correct it. anyone have some ideas??? thanks alot
There are a number of things to look at.
1. pitman arm nut. Make sure it hasn't loosened
2. Tracbar bracket. Make sure the bolts are tight. 2 going into the frame from underneath, one through the crossmember.
3. Tracbar. Check to make sure bolts are 450ft-lbs tight
4. draglink ends and tierod ends. Use a large pair of channel-locks and try to compress the ball joints. Any play and they should be replaced.
5. Wheel bearings. Check to see that they have no movement.
6. steering box lash. Adjust as per factory specs.
If everything checks out or you replaced some parts or made the adjustments and still does it, then the steering box might be worn out. Only fix is to replace or rebuild.
thanks alot guys, just found out, took it to a buddys shop. track bar is stock and is blown out! gonna order an adjustable one, but ive seen trac bar relocation brackets. will i need those? thanks!
I would think yes on the relocation brackets. We had a jeep with a 3" lift and no relocation bracket and it was nearly scary to drive like you said above
If you have a drop pitman arm, you need a drop tracbar bracket. Imperative to maintain a parallel draglink and tracbar, and if you can keep factory angles, even better. With any lift 4" or over with a leaf sprung SD, you should have both.
