I have developed a bearing roar in the last week and it has come on pretty strong and quick...Do center carrier bearing roar when going bad?
I thought it might be a rear wheel bearing, but I jacked up one side of the truck and ran it at 25mph on the stand and roar was the same, so I switched sides, roar was still there and the same, so im thinking Pinion bearings or carrier bearings..truck has 234K rear end oil was changed when I installed the 2008 Diff. cover about 60K miles ago.
YES THEY DO!!!! I dropped my 2pc drive shaft this morning, and the carrier bearing did have some roughness to it when I spun it..So I took it to Sonnys Drive Line here in Knoxville (Same guy that made my driveshaft for my wifes lifted Excursion) And he agreed that the Carrier bearing was bad, we aslo checked the U-Joints and 2 of them had rough spots. So after 234,000 miles I told him to go ahead and rebuild both shafts, new carrier bearing, all 3 new U-Joints and to rebalance the assy..for a total cost of $223.00 driveshafts look like new money... I went ahead and replaced pinion seal and the 8 u-joint strap bolts since ford had them and they were only a $1.25 each..
Truck is now back on the road and quite as it should be...NICE!!!!!
just so you know, a carrier bearing has the same moan as a rear wheel bearing...we had to replace a rear wheel bearing in my sons F250 about 6 months ago, and it had the same moan.. Growl the got loader until about 23MPH then leveled off and could be heard up until 40MPH then the road noise drownded it out. but then you could here it again on the decel side also..just so know...
All ball/roller bearings roar or rumble when going bad. I took a 3rd member apart once over a U-joint that was rumbling but still tight.
