my sd gets the romps in the 40's, in the twentys it just wants to fire and die, the colder it gets the more it fires and dies but will eventually start. it has new good working glow plugs , soliniod and batterys. it has started at -1 like this its just a pain. could it be injector issues? it got worse after i took off the 15* pump and put on a good working 17*. it runs great just acts stupid on cold starts. also i run the same oil as in my puller and the puller always started better than even w/o glow plugs.
15w-40 delo 400. same as the puller and my g-dads e99. heck on the stock motor in my 96 puller, i had the glow plugs on a switch and it would start up and just purr in the 40's w/o even using them. thats the same weight i have always used. o and the icp jumps w/ the romps, of course it should some w/ more rpm. i am kinda stumped as it got worse w/ a better hpop. only codes i get when i test the gp system w/ ae is for the intake heater being gone.
Is it tuned? I've got some tunes that just romp on cold starts no matter what. But the fact that you have trouble starting it sometimes points to something more than just tuning.
relay works, had a light on it. the oil is never old. does it in any program and stock, just a lil worse in high programs. it was a pita all last winter so i am tryin to get it figured out before this winter. i was never not able to get it running after i put new batts in that would take the cranking just a pain. i just dont feel its the gp cause in the 40's it shouldn even need them to start up fine.
I know for a fact glow plugs can go bad and still ohm out fine. Only way I found it was to put current to it. Now that is the way I test them. But is it possible for you to have enough out to cause this issue? Did you replace the GP or test all of them?
i had replaced them. last winter when i was fighting all this they were pretty much new. i had 3 bad in my 96 back when it was my dd and it never romped and when it got to the teens it just flat wouldn start. i run lucas stabilizer and carson told me to try the synthetic as it works much better w/ our injectors. its almost due for a change so il try that. also whats the tolerances for the armatures in the injectors?
Does it romp on startup or is it rough like injs are missing? If it is rough like injs missing sounds like it could be leaking down oil from the resevoir allowing some air to get into the system causing it to idle rough until the resevoir is filled back up with oil. Can you run a rotational velocity test? Which cps is on the truck? Sounds like maybe a stuck injector even.
its not a miss just a romp for a few seconds. when it fires and dies its like its a big romp that kills it. the resivour is never low enough to cause problems when i have checked it. i did see rotation test in ae? its the black cps.
Awaiting to see what the fix is. My friends E99 does the same exact thing. New GPR fresh Ams Oil. It romps and cuts off. The only way it will crank right up is if the truck is pluged in.
One thing we've been consistently seeing in regards to cold-start romping is low ICP. This is frequently due to oil viscosity (in which switching to thinner oil may help), or in some cases where you have a chip or programmer there may need to be some tuning adjustments to help stabilize the ICP. In extreme cases, replacement of the HPOP might also be necessary.
I had romps until I switched to Rotella 5w40 fully synthetic, and she was still a little grumpy until I replaced all my GPs & put in the Stancor relay. We're just starting to get cold here now, but maybe over the weekend I won't plug her in just to see how she does.
Stancor, known-good GPs, and full-syn oil is my recipe for no romps.
Not to hijack your thread just got a quick question.
My friend told me that if you plug your truck up on a regular basis it would get acustomed to it and would be harder to start if it was not pluged in.
Is there any truth to this statment?
Mine did the same thing. Hpop is also in steller shape. Switched from rotella 15w40 to 5w sythetic...guess what? Romps Gone. Its your oil.
