So, the gearbox crapped out last night. Did a little research and ordered a Redhead.
My question: the PS pump is the original (as far as I know - 183K). Should I go ahead replace it while I'm doing the gearbox? If so, any recommendations or will OEM work?
The little research I did suggested that getting a pump that flowed more volume wasn't necessarily a good thing, because of the hydroboost limitation. So, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with one brand over another for a stocker?
Parts store ones are junk. And it took me two pumps from ford before I could turn the wheel while not moving. I am still not happy with how it is working so I am thinking about running hydro assist. If your pump worked good brfore the box broke stick with it.
I had no problems with the pump, but I have heard of guys losing theirs and then having a problems with the replacement pumps. I was just wondering if I was on "borrowed-time" with the current pump?? Thanks!
$326+shipping. Does not include the $125 core charge, but they are including in the shipping label for the return. More than what the parts store units were going for, but my research led me to believe you get what you pay for.
I am on my 3rd red head in 15k miles. I must have the worst luck. But, Harvey stood by his product and replaced the gear each time. He is a man of his word. I think my gear issues are behind me.
OP, if it works, don't mess with it.
You need to make sure your wheels are straight before removing the old box. When you pull the shaft off the gear box you need to keep it from turning when installing new box. Thr new box should come centered up already.
Easier said than done.
Trying to turn 37s without steering is a challenge. I guess I can jack it up and straighten them from there.
But, the problem is that the steering column is currently free-spinning, so determining center is a bit of an issue.
When hooked to the gearbox it would have been easy to tell. 2-1/2 turns lock to lock. The problem now is that you have most likely damaged the clockspring in the column under the steering wheel. At this point just make sure the wheel is straight when you hook it to the box. Just be prepared to replace the clockspring.
I wrecked my truck into the ditch about 6 months back and bent the output part of the gearbox.well the guys that tryed to allign my truck said a brand new gear box was like $1,000+.Is this true for some vehicles or were they trying to scam me?
I replaced the steering gearbox yesterday on my Fathers 06 f350.
You should have put the steering wheel straight and strapped it before you did anything to the steering gearbox.
Now you'll have to guess as to where the steering shaft and steering gear line up. If your steering shaft has a flat spot for a bolt to tighten down on you can figure out it's position on the radius in relation to how far the wheels are turned and the pitman arm location. This will only work if you havent spun the steering wheel after removing the steering shaft from the gearbox.
I need a little help with this, the pitman arm broke off Chelsea's Ex at the box, I have the steering column centered but the box I can not get centered. I have fought it for two days off and on.
Is there only about 1/4 of travel at the pitman arm? I cant seem to get the splines in the right pos...
Anyone have any pictures of there pitman arm location when the wheels are centered? or full lock one side or the other.
I am really tired of laying under there in the snow on my trailer...
The box is centered when the pitman arm is pointed straight to the front bumper. If the pitman arm is straight to the front bumper and your steering wheel is cenetered adjust the draglink(bar the connects the pitman arm the passnger side knuckle) until the wheels are straight.

I'll try and get pics of my truck, tonight. Can you post up pics of what you are running into? I'm just having a hard time picturing it.
Like any male, I like pics!
I'm a little confused. The pitman ARM can only go on one way. It has thicker spines that prevent the pitman ARM being put on the wrong way. The thicker spines are in the shape of a triangle. This is all on my 06
And that shows exactly what I saw once I looked at another superduty. It was Nicks, which is a E-99 and has the 8 spline box... Once I saw his put together it started to click.
You soudn like you need to stop like you have said and hit it tomorrow. I bet it will not be an issue once you have gotten some rest. It does sound like you might have it flipped over.
Its really quite easy once you stop and count the splines on the box... The 32 spline orients the flats at 45* to the frame. The 36 spline does it at 90*... So after four boxes the parts shop realized that they were giving me the wrong box.
Once I had the right box it was done within an hour.
Glad you got it fixed, Joe.
Never even thought to ask you about the spline count. Redhead asked me when I ordered a new box, so I had to go out and count them.
