Head studs without replacing gaskets?

I have a 2004 6.0 with 158k miles. Runs great, no oil leaks, no issue with anything much. I have installed an SCT tuner, 4 inch exhaust, no cat or muff. I want to replace the HBs with studs. The gaskets are still good. Was thinking removing one bolt at a time and eplacing with a ARP stud in the correct torque sequence. Seems this is all that would need to be done. head gaskets leak due to stretched bolts, not gasket failure. Also installing EGR delete, new turbo boots, and O/H kit in the oil cooler. Has anyone done this with the head bolts with no issues. Would save alot of work, versus removing the heads! Holla back atta FORD brutha!

Re: Head studs without replacing gaskets?

from what I have heard it doesn't work, the reason the head gaskets fail is bc of the heads not being flat.

There's guys that have had some sucess with it but in my opinion it's not the right way to do it and be done with it.

As for the studs, if your gonna do it, might as well do it right the first time.

Re: Head studs without replacing gaskets?

I would pull the heads... but that is just me. Make sure you have a machine shop check them out. Studs wont hold if the head is not flat.

Re: Head studs without replacing gaskets?

I did it that way but i had ford warranty do the gaskets they wouldnt actally put the studs in for me so i ended doing it right after so they had around 1000 miles on brand new gaskets. I did talk to the machanic and he said my heads were perfect actually he couldnt belive how good they were...I have sct on extreme race i drive the truck very hard i also pulled 12,000 lbs on a tow tune and i havent had any issues... But if i was in your situation i would def pull them!

Re: Head studs without replacing gaskets?

Also i would not do the ARP studs until the current HG's fail, right now you have the factory torque on the heads, purchase the Head Studs and just wait until you start to puke with confirmed bad HG's, then take it apart, put onyx gaskets on and install head studs.
