So my Dana Trac-Loc (Ford LS) on my rear D80 is on its way out. So I'm probably replacing with Eaton Detroit TrueTrac. But thinking I'll change out my 4.10 front and rear gears for either 3.73's or 3.55's, and add a TrueTrac on the front. I know 80's and 90's Broncos and F-series offered LS on front as option. Anyone running a LS on the front of their OBSs or SDs? Some say I'll get a lot of binding and steering problems, but I do know that Ford offered and installed a lot of front LSs. Anyone here have actual experience with front LSs and steering?
I had a factory limited slip in my 97 obs reg cab and I loved it. It did take a lighter foot on the skinny pedal in the ice and snow.Kind of like driving a front wheel drive car with power. It was worth it for putting all 4 to the ground though but I could get the front end to wheel hop though was the only bad part.If you get in some deep stuff the front would wheel hop just like a rear would without traction bars. The truck was only 3 years old when I had it at the time.
It was a consideration when I redid my differentials and gears, but I decided on ARB air lockers at each end. Either locked or unlocked depending on what you want, and more predictable in slippery conditions.
I thought there was a period of time when you got a limit slip from Ford that you got both axles stuffed. I wondered about turning abilities in the slick stuff myself.
Limited slip might suck in real slick conditions, I had a truetrac in the front of my bronco for a while and finally got sick of it and put the arb in but it was all time 4x4 also.
I had the LS on my 92 Bronco. Think that was the year. It was the year they came out with the last body style before they stopped making them. It was great for OR with a little brake if you needed to but if you did not know or was use to it in snow and ice it was freaky. When it locked it woudl pull you way off your line fast. Once you got use to it was better but if I had my choice I would go with something that could be locked and unlocked like a Elocker or ARB. It snot like you need it with normal driving and when you do want it you want it for sure not when it feels like it. Consider there is likely a reason they didn't offer it on the Expeditions.
