7.3 IDI Straight Pipe sound

well i was headin home from work on monday i believe, and i was behind a ole boy with a 92-93 3/4 ton 4wd straight cab 7.3. he had it true dualed, and man when he'd get on it, it sounded awesome. ive been drivin my dodge since 03 and love the sound of my cummins with straight pipe and 7x36 stacks, but it made me remeber my 99 straight pipe. my neighbor back home had a 86 6.9 and he had it straight and true dualed. i allways liked that sound and its that type of loud that pisses people off when you go blowin by them. i dont know, it brought back memories and i wish i had another ford 7.3 or 6.9. just thought id let yall know that some of us cummins guys like that sound of those international engines

Well thank you, personally I love the sound of the 98-02 24v Cummins. I know what you mean about the IDIs with a straight pipe. I had a 3.5" side pipe that was superloud next to a bridge or building or another car. I'm a big fan of stacks so I fabbed up my own set just like you would for anything else. It goes from 2.5" to 3.5" by the tranny then I ran a 3.5" pipe up to my 5" T pipe. Need less to say it's VERY loud.
Here's a video I took of it offroad, would have gone through alot faster but we were just about right on the ground clearence limit with 31" tires.

Re: 7.3 IDI Straight Pipe sound

yeah, i put my stacks on my truck myself as well. turbo, and stock DP, into 4" flex pipe, into 5" 90, then into the 5" in the bed, then into 7" stacks painted black. i used to have a 99 7.3 powerstroke, and i had it just straight piped with a 6" slant cut tip. i really like the way it sounded too, especially under bridges or driving by concrete walls. it really screamed when i kept it down in drive wile towing heavy (aprx 20-21k lbs). talk about people tryin to get out of your way before they even see you coming

Re: 7.3 IDI Straight Pipe sound

I don't have stacks yet, but straight piping has been my favorite mod so far

I'll tell ya I got to drive a 94 IDI Crew cab with a 3" DP & 4" pipe the rest of the way back & I had to put my head next to the dash to hear it running.
I think the turbo muffles the sound about 60% or more. at least that's what it seems like to me.

Here's a video I got from the inside of my truck. I was trying to catch up with SMOKEN BLUE STROKER & had the old IDI wound up. Kinda help give you an idea how loud it is & trust me it's very loud without a turbo.

I love IDI's but man are they dogs compared to a Powerstroke. Unless turning up the fuel makes a big difference in the old trucks.

Turning up the fuel didn't do a great deal more power for me. I guess alittle at the low end maybe. Mine don't move that bad with a straight pipe & 4.10 gears. But yes you more or less have to accept them for what they are.

I love the reliability of the old trucks and they get pretty darn good mileage too!
