...a busted shock, but it isn't. So that's the sound. I have new upper/lower balljoints, new brakes, left front wheel bearing. All ujoints in the frontend are fine. To be honest, I've had this for a long time, but finally can get to it. I'm thinking spring bushings, but I'm not sure.
Back a few years, on my e99 F250 4X4, the same noise occurred after around 20k miles. Ford repaired it under warranty, and I think there was a recall, or service bulletin about it. Does anyone recall either? Or maybe someone give me some ideas. I know for sure there is nothing wrong with any part of the steering gear, it was gone thru. Swaybar bushings maybe?
Check the sway bar bushings (axle mounts and end links). Check the shock bushings, especially the lowers. Check the tracbar bolts. Check the tracbar bracket bolts.
I got underneath, and checked out the suggestions. Panhard bushings were good. All ball joints have only around 5k on them. Tie rod ends good. Now the swaybar. Mount bushings should likely be replaced, as well as the bushings on the vertical members on the swaybar ends, I don't know the proper name. The sway bar mount bushings look pretty straight forward, but do I need a press or anything for the vertical parts?
I feel like an idiot calling parts those names, but I hope I described them enough to get the correct name from someone. Swaybar links maybe?
To see if the sway bar is your issue simply unhook it and see if the noise goes away. Mine are a problem and NAPA is supposed to sell replacements (moog?) cheap.
Well what do ya know! The bushings were pretty much gone on my swaybar. After I took it off, I went for a ride on some washboard. SILENCE AT LAST!! I ordered a set of bushings from Energy Suspension. I looked at the replacement links, but man!, They were $67 a piece. Sometimes I get cheap.
It's nice to finally have time to work on these things, in fact, all the time I want.
Replaced the bushings today, no more noise other than a tire that sounds like a flat spot, and a little vibration, I think it's all the tire. I didn't notice any better handling, just silence.
