The U Joints are shot in my 95 F-250. My question is...... on my D50 there is a short shaft on the passenger side with a u joint (not the steering one, the middle one) and it is still good. While I have it apart do I replace that one and go through all the hassle of draining and taking apart the front end, or just leave it and put it back together.
Any guidance from the powerstroke pros would be appreciated.
Preventative maintenance is the key with these trucks or any vehicle for that matter. You can either change it now or tear everything apart again to fix it later. Peace of mind in my book. Rob is right though. If you want longevity out of the truck the cost of upkeep on the d50 is far outweighed by the initial cost of converting to the d60.
There is an easier way to change that u-joint rather than pulling everything apart. Stick a bottle jack under the u-joint and push it out.
Also, there is a flat spot under the D50 pumpkin. Drill a hole in the flat spot and tap it out to whatever size plug you want to put in. The fluid will run out when you break through the housing.
