I seem to remember hearing about this a while back.... I was at a stop today for about 10 seconds and noticed a wisp of smoke from the steering column. Anyone remember what causes this? Was it the blinker/combination switch assembly?
The switch quit working on Ma's 00 about 2 years ago, & I never thought too much of it. Earlier this year out of the blue it wouldn't shift into OD anymore, ran codes & nothing showed up. Hooked up the scanner & it wasn't commanding OD lockup, replaced the arm & worked fine again after that. Never had smoke though.
Matt, when you pull it apart take a close look at all your wires in there. The way those wires are ran is horrible, they are very tight and could have worn thru in a few spots. If my memory is correct(old age) I think that was the problem, chaffed wires.
I had taped up my OD wires from being worn and a year later I had smoke from the column and the instrument cluster quit working, and I had no throttle response. The wires ended up taking out the fuse. My switch was still fine just had to repair the wires, I chose to re-run all three wires this time.
