96 obs has abs light on, why?

My 96 Ford f250 has a abs brake light on, when I start it. Shorty after starting the truck it turns off and with in a 5-10 sec it turns back on and stays on. The brake are working fine and have had no brake work done with in last year. Has any see this before or have any sugestions what it could be. Thanks Monte

Re: 96 obs has abs light on, why?

When mine did that it was the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the rear end pumpkin (even though my speedometer was still functioning normally). I could be something else too (such as wiring harness problems). Cheers!

When you turn your key on the lights light up to show you that they work, when you start and drive a vehicle with ABS or RWAL it does a self test every time and if it fails then it turns on the light. You can pull a code and see why it is turning on the light when the light is on, usually the dump valve on the frame in the rear brake line is bad, could be VSS on the rear axle. You really need to pull the code or you are just guessing.

Re: 96 obs has abs light on, why?

Mine is an SD, but maybe I could give a suggestion. Do you have any squeaking from either front corner when turning? I do, and got playing around with my left front sensor, wiggled it around a couple times, and the squeak got worse. And yes, my ABS light is in solid. I had that wheel bearing changed out, and new brakes done around 3k ago, so naturally I suspected that corner.

Question, if your VSS on the rear axle is bad, wouldn't the speedo and cruise both be inoperable?

check your fluid level also . if comes on when the level gets to low. or it could possible be your vaccum pump starting to go bad.

The "red" Brake warning light will illuminate when the vacuum is low or if the fluid level is low. The "ABS" light is a different indicator. Cheers!

Have you replaced any lights or bulbs with LED recently? This will cause the problems you talking about. There is not enough resistance with LED's to current. If you have a simple inline resistor from any good auto shop will solve problem

Re: 96 obs has abs light on, why?

Once my ABS light came on and stayed on. Fuse kept blowing. Couldn't figure it out until I fixed the wire that went to the third brake light for the topper. Fixed the wire, replaced the fuse, ABS light went out. Go figure!

Dang ABS don't work anyhow.
