I turn the steering wheel, say to the left, then I turn it back to the right and the whole steering assembly (drag link and tie rods) rotate up and then vise-versa when I turn the other way. (to the right) why is it doing this? All of the parts are either new or in good shape. It has I think around a 4" drop pitman arm on it. Need some help ASAP. The truck as been aligned.
Your track bar and drag link are at an angle. They are at slight angles on stock trucks, and severe angles on poorly lifted trucks. When you try to turn while the tires are not moving, stress rises and and the linkage is pulled in the direction resulting from the stress ( down in one direction, up in the opposite). When you are driving, the tires follow the direction you point them with little stress, and you will not have the up and down motion occur. It is hard on a vehicle to turn the steering much when you are not rolling.
It's severe enough that I can feel and hear it when it happens though. I don't have a steering stabilizer FYI. If I turn the wheel while I look at the tires, the tires physically start to turn, then you can see them "pause" while the steering assembly rotates.
How much force did it take to swing the knuckles from stop to stop before you hooked up any steering linkage? Is back spacing on the wheels correct for this axle?
The backspacing worked for my F250 dana 50 TTB. Would it be different for the dana 60? Hope not. I bought the truck with the wheels so I don't know. Everything looks good. I tried the stabilizer bar with almost no change. Another forum suggested making some washers our of some poly bushings and putting them between the tie rod and knuckle. They said that worked for them just not to make them too tight or it could pop the tie rod off. With the steering linkage off and the truck jacked up it wasn't much force to swing the knuckles. I could do it with one hand.
