DT 466

what could I do to a 1990 DT 466 to make some serious power???

I can get one for $200 that is complete but needs a "Wet Sleeve" rebuild.... WTF is that????

would it fit in my SD??? similar footprint to a cummins???

what kinda power is possible for the cheapest amount of money?? say..... around.... $5K....

Thanks
~Jim

Re: DT 466

Hypermax, Scheid's, Columbus Diesel and a few more all build 466's. They are very popular in tractor pulling. I think a 1990 466 would have the inline inj. pump, so pretty much all the same things as you would do to a 12v cummins to make power. They will fit in a SD but it is a lot of work, the engine is longer than a cummins so you would have to move the firewall, ect. When i wear out my powerstroke there will a inline pumped 466 in my truck, got most of it worked out, just gonna be a big project.

Re: DT 466

It "could" fit in your truck but some serious mods will have to be considered before hand. It's bigger than a B series Cummins & weighs more too. It has been done before but it's ALOT of work. You can turn up the stock pump alittle or you can find a P pump & throw it on there & really crank out the juice. I know 69W will be in here shortly to fill in the blanks.

Re: DT 466

ok... maybe I will leave it out of the SD but I think for the $200 it would be fun to mess around with...maybe fab some twins, then someday find a rig to put it in....hmmmm.....

but what is a "Wet Sleeve Rebuild".... I dont know tooo much about the bigger engines....

Thanks

Re: DT 466

wet sleeve means the sleeves are against the water jackets so to get the old ones out ive seen a few beads of weld run down the inside to get them out and then the new one get soaked in dry ice before you put them in. I did it once in high school to a JD engine. That is my geuss as to what you mean by a wet sleeve rebuild.

Re: DT 466

Genuineford know's a guy that has a DT466 in an older chevy like your Perkins setup. I guess it's a DD tow rig & works great.

Re: DT 466

The DT466 is a wet sleeve engine. So you need an inframe kit or an overhaul kit if you want to go all the way. You don't need to mess around with dry ice and all that BS. You just get a standard liner puller and yard them out, stuff the new liners in and your done. A DT466 inframe kit ranges from around 900 - 1,500 depending on what generation that engine is for an aftermarket inframe kit. Add another 500-800 for an overhaul kit.

A DT466 will kit in a SD but you will have to relocate the cooling stack to the bed as the DT466 is longer than a 7.3 or a 6B Cummins. A DT466 only weighs around 350-450lbs more than a 7.3.

For a hotrod build you want a late model 466 with a P-pump. Ideally the last few years before they switched to electronic since they had much better rods and blocks. You can build enough power in a DT466 to scatter every pickup drive-train part in that truck. If you really get serious about putting a 466 in you are gonna need to start looking at getting a real trans and diff as well.

Nothing worse than a good idea that doesn't work.

Re: DT 466

What are the dimensions of a DT466 versus an L series 8.9L Cummins? Because we have an L series in a SD, my Boss' truck. It's been in there since '01. We re-used the factory radiator, works just fine even when grossing 50k+.

As for a trans, you would prolly want an Allison MD3060 or 3000 series. We run the MD3060 behind the L series in the aforementioned '01 SD.

I personally want to put a DT466 in an F-series or a SD, but where I work the only talk is always Ford/Cummins swaps, my Boss has been doing them since 1991, almost as long as Dodge!

You can forget about pulling anywhere also, unless you want to run an exhibition pull
