Remember the day last year it was 92 degrees and snowed 6" the next day!!
Any possibility of snow down here should be 4-5 months away! I consider snow one of those bad 4 letter words
I have some samson amsteel 2 plus 5/8 rope that I have for recovery it has a 29,000 lb work rating. I have 3/8" on the winch that has a 10,400 lb rating.
I like a 3" x 25'. Enough length to snatch anyone and strong enough to take the abuse. I don't like chains only because one almost killed once. Plus straps stretch and snap to give a little extra pull to get things moving.
i was watching Top Gear today(bbc) and the guys were trying to get to the north pole. their truck kept getting stuck in deep snow. what they used for a recovery strap i have never seen. they used an actual bungy cord that you would use to jump off something with. granted it was doubled up a few times. it was rather fun to watch. they recovery truck would take off like a bat out of hell and the bungy would stretch and when it got to its stretch limit it would recoil and pull the stuck truck out very smoothly every time. not sure if a bungy is strong enough to get something as heavy as our trucks out, but i am going to look into this and see if i can find a used bungy for cheap!
We use them as rigging for hoisting certain loads. I dont think they're cheap tho. Its like a lanyard in that it absorbs alot of uneven force. CHains arent really a good idea for pulling and shockloads. I have a 3"x50' strap with eyes on both ends and several clevices to double it up. If its not dangerously cold out I dont pull people out unless I know them.
I use one of those braided blue ropes. Mine is rated for heavy duty 4 wheel drives. My dad has one for big tractors that has a limit of like 120k. Mine actually works better because it stretches.
It makes me pretty nervous pulling people out, I'm always worried some clown will drive up the road and hit the strap while I'm pulling, or the person in the vehicle getting extricated will roll or slide into me after I get them on the road.
2" x 30' is all I have ever used, bought it 20years ago and it is just now getting worn out, I'll be buying the same again. if the load is over 10k I wont be helping them anyway. and I have only used chains when you are towing and not snapping
i use 1 inch ratchet straps to secure things in the bed of the truck.
i have no use for recovery straps, because i have never gotten stuck.
if i need to pull someone out of a snow bank, i use the case hardened chain i carry.
i don't go off road to get people unstuck from somewhere they should not have gone in the first place.
i have 2-2.5"x30' snatch straps, they work like a charm if its a big load like a dump truck i just use both, and if they both don't work I pull out my good ole 5"x50' strap. I use a shackle/D-ring which ever i grab out of the tool box first.
My dad has a 5" x 100' strap that they used to pull antenna's from helicopters its rated to like 100 tons and it weighs list 120 pounds its rediculous ill try to get a picture for you guys
Recovery? When the truck wont go anymore, thats when I drop the Polaris RMK, and she doesnt stick.
