ok, I have gone through a bunch of threads with similar problems. But nothing that described exactly what i have here. My truck has had this junk on the cap of the overflow bottle for about 6 months. The truck doesn't smoke, overheat, run like junk, use oil or coolant. This is my DD and has not towed anything bigger than a two place snowmobile trailer.
2003 6.0l, auto, 120k, sct livewire, 4'' exhaust.
thanks for any help, pics should be below.
I have owned the truck for about 8 months. I have not replaced anything yet, and oasis came up clean. So i think everything is stock. I haven't looked at EOT vs ECT yet. I cant get my livewire to show EOT.
I think oil cooler or EGR cooler. But the EGR cooler doesn't explain oil in the coolant. In the five times I've done HG's, I haven't encountered this issue yet. But there's still time.
From all the other oil cooler threads i have looked at, there is a lot of oil in the coolant. There doesn't seem to be much oil in my coolant. Just what is on the cap.
Drain it, flush it out with VC9 from Motorcraft, then put in the yellow coolant from Ford. The green stuff cavitates the metal. Ive never tried the VC9 and just recently found out about it but its supposed to work well for the 6.0s.
Youll just have to keep draining it 2 or 3 times adding distilled water to it until the old coolant is gone. Once its all gone, flush it out then keep an eye on it for a while. Usually a bad oil cooler makes the degass bottle look like chocalate milk. I think in your case some idiot mixed up to many diffrent antifreezes or it may have overheated before you got it. Just use the Motorcraft yellow coolant or the Zerex GO 5 also meets the standards for Navistar engines.
I just discovered the same issue with our 6.0. I'm certain it's the oil coolier because the stuff in the degas bottle is milky, thick viscosity, and smells of oil. Not much doubt there!
vc-9 does great for rust and dirty coolant. For leaking oil coolers I flush it with a gallon of Simple Green with the thermostat removed. Those pics look like a leaking oil cooler to me. What does it smell like?
It really doesn't have a oily smell to it. And the coolant looks pretty clean still. I think i just rinse the system out a couple times, and put rite coolant back in it.
Does the coolant look milky also or is it just a layer on top.If it is just a layer on top of the coolant it could be fuel in the coolant. The oil will usually mix in with the coolant, but the fuel will be a layer on top.
update. I took the truck to the ford dealer for a coolant flush. Its been a couple weeks sense it has been flushed, and there is no more residue on the cap! Everything looks clean and back to normal. My truck is happy once again, thanks for all the help.
