I am buyin a 2000 v10 excursion 2 wheel drive. I am getting it dirt cheap because of the v10. Now my question is. How would yall go about doing this. I would like to put a 12v cummins with the dodge auto behind it in there. but would yall se any problems im not thinking about with this swap? I would do a 7.3 but there a little more high dollar and not a fuel eficiant. and i also know a whole lot about building and tuning the old 12 valves. If any one has done anything like this.(mostly worried about going from gas to diesel not so much the ford to cummins part.) thank you for any input.
My over all goals for this ex is best fuel economy while towing my travel trailer with the whole family.
I am putting a dt360 in my Ex, but The availability for 12 valve parts is hard to beat. Problem is the dodge trans is junk unless you throw some money at it. But that is true to some degree of any manufacturer.
yeah i know a lot about the 12vs can always seem to get them to run good. I got my 7.3 to run good too but no comparison to the 12v. Well when you factor in all the money spent anyways.. good luck on your swap..
I don't think that the internals are all that different, I know a guy that has one behind his 24v cummins in an EX. The problem is the damn thing is geared to high for the diesel. I would start with a 7.3 4r100 or 47/re for gearing purposes.
i ended up not buyin the v10 ex, i went with a much cheaper 2000 ex. limited with the 5.4 v8 auto, so when i do the swap im gonna be using the 12v and dodge 2wd auto tranny. Any pointers for that swap? should be strait forward, pull out stock motor and tranny, insert new 12v with 47re attached and start fabbin up motor and tranny mounts. Then on to figuring out how to adapt dodge sensors for the speedo, voltmeter, tach, and oil pressure to the ford wireing harness.
gonna keep the stock 12v mechanical fuel pump and just make a draw straw for the sending unit in the tank and run a new fuel line to the pump. and try and use the stock return line. shouldnt be that hard? well in my mind thats all i got to do. Any one happen to know what rear ends they put in those stock 2000 excursions with the 5.4? thanks yall. ALso if anyone has a stock 7.3 powerstroke and 2wd tranny let me know, if its for the right price i wouldnt be opposed to swapin that in either..... you know just to keep it all ford like and stuff.
Well here it is...... now time to find a good wrecked 2wd dodge w/12v and auto tranny this build is going to be done to boost fuel economy to the max and also pull my 5000 pound travel trailer....... Found a couple just not sure if i want to travel that far to trailer a wrecked dodge back....
got one more question for those that have done this before..... How did yall tig up the cruise control? did ya use the stock dodge cruise control servo and stuff or the ford stuff adapted to the cummins engine? and did the dodge a/c compressor just hook riht up to the ford a/c lines? or were there line end mods to do? thanks yall.

I know on my brothers 12v swap it uses a v-10 cruise actuator, I would think that the 5.4 would work but dont know if the motor inside is as strong. This away all you have to do is hook the cable end up to the pump, ie. no wiring other than speedo signal. On the A/C it has the lines tig welded together, but Im not sure if its got a ford or a dodge compressor on it.
"Fuel economy to the max" ain't gonna happen with an automatic.
Since you are in for an engine swap, why not put the ZF6-650 behind it. Get at least 2, maybe 4 MPG better and you forget all the folderol that goes with automatics. You are in control.
Compared to swapping in a 12v, adding a clutch mechanism is child's play.
i would love to have the 6 speed. unfortunatly im building this for my wife..... so auto it is. and fuel economy to the max"well for an auto." but im gonna be doing things like lowering it/air dam and skinny tires. mabey even regear to 3.08s.....
Thanks, alright I have the donor truck. It is a 97 dodge, 2wd 12v auto. I plan on putting the whole deal in the Ford, trans. And all. how would I go about making the stock dodge auto work right in the Ford? And what ex. Manifold do I need to be looking at. Getting for the turbo not to hit the a/c box?
i might have got my wife talked into the manual tranny swap in it too.... what do yall think about the 12v, with a stock dodge 2wd nv4500 5 speed? do any of you folks know if the ford superduty clutch setup and hydraulics work with the dodge slave cylinder?
all I can say is if your going to go with a auto tranny, get an allison, its slightly more than the dodge stock for stock but if your juicing the 12v you going to have to make adjustments to either one, and then there about the same price, and the allison will hold up to A LOT LOT LOT LOT LOT LOT more use and abuse, much easier to control and setup than most people think Destroked has all the controllers and adaptors you would need. and I'm almost positive you'll use the dodge AC compressor (but def. ask someone else if you can get the Ford one to work it'll be stronger) IMHO
