ok well im lookin to buy some new tires for my PSD. well im lookin for a good tire thats a 315/75/16 in an E range. i would like an aggressive all terrain. cause i drive more on the road than the dirt but it still needs to work off road. cause i do use out in fields on farms and stuff. of course it needs to last pretty good. if i have to ill get a mud terrain if needed.
:whs: and also look at the load rating in lbs, sometimes the D range is only a little less and alot cheaper if your not towing or hauling heavy there enough for alot less coin
goodyear silent armors. I tow heavy most of the time and the D rated tires I have to run at the max pressure to take the sway out and I had always worn the centers out but the E's do not do this. I have been very happy with the goodyears
Yep, bottom line is D vs E indicates the construction of the tire not its capacity. Some d's have higher weight ratings and vice versa. Ive ran and am running d's now and nothing broke, blew up, or came apart. Some ppl will get a little hung up on 'Gotta have E rated tires on this truck' and then when they see how much they are buy the cheapest gddamned one they can find and wind up with a tire that is rated for less than the D they liked in the first place.
iv looked at the ratings and thats what i noticed. im leaning towards the nitto terra grapplers. iv heard good about them and i think the rating is a 3300lbs
Id love to try the trail grapplers myself. I got a MT baja claw back in april and they've been great. Ive got about 10k on them already and they are good on the road, off the road, and on wet pavement. In sand they are unstoppable!
I bought a set and mounted them on spare rims to run in the winter here for snow plowing. I think we average like a hundred twenty to a hundred forty inches a year hear. They took minimal weights to balance. I have run many mud terrains and these seem a little better than average for ride quality and road precision. Excellent soft condition traction. Tightened up center lug section seems to prolong tread wear, but I wont waste them in the summer, I put the stockers back on. Average amount of road noise, which I enjoy. Mine are 275-70-18 E, and I'm pleased to see you didn't de rate your truck and go with D's. No manufacturer will sell these trucks without E's for a reason. despite what the experts will espouse here.
I'm looking at the general tire. 295/75r/16. They are size 33.4. A allterain tire. There D rated. 3416lb. I did the comparrison to the bf allterain 285/75/16 E range and there basicly the same. The general costs about $40.00 cheaper per tire and they have a 60,000 warrenty
THose will be plenty for a 3/4 or 1ton truck. Dont let anybody tell you that because its not an E rated that you made a mistake. If you drive and occasionally tow or haul heavy then a high cap 'D' is a great tire.
"Again slapping a letter e on the side of a tire carcass doesnt make it a better or safer tire."
It just makes it a legal tire. If the sticker in the jamb says E then you must be running E. Otherwise YOU are responsible for the wreck that may or may not have been caused by you using non-specified equipment. What's it worth to you?
I agree that the 3415# rated stock E tire can be replaced with a 3415+# rated tire of lower tread ply rating but legally this is not true. The law doesn't consider weight rating of the tire, they want to see the E.

To add to this....had a tread separate that took out the quarter panel and exhaust on my truck. See here
Contacted BFG at the suggestion of other posters and they wouldn't do anything due to "...the improper tire load range application for the vehicle."
Don't know if the problem was related to the load rating, but do know if it happened with an E rated tire, BFG assured me they would have paid to repair the truck.
SO somebody with b plates and a very mild interest in towing needs an e-rated tire even if its rated lower than a d? Thats f'n retarded. I bet you're fun to be around "no guys we cant do that! Its illegal and fun...cant have that."
My advice is a little more sound. Yours is close-minded and rigid just like the e-rated tire. If somebody tows weekly I recommend a stock truck suspension and tires that fit that truck in an e-rating by a 'good' manufacturer. The weight rating needs to be higher than 3300lbs per tire or its not any better than alot of d's...end of story...you're saying e's only..im saying if ya can run the d's legally and safely, why not?(that was rhetoric dont need a reply)...
Anyway, you're the only person I know that thinks this way and this way only. Whatever......i care not anymore...
Regardless of weight, a d range tire will balloon in the center of the tread and wear out faster. An e range tire will stay flat and wear even. Personally I would pay the couple extra clams for the e range and have a longer lasting tire.
The only time Ive seen that is when they are over-inflated or mounted on the wrong width rim. In fact the e's that were on my truck had about 12k on them( I checked my service log today) and they were refused for repair by the tire shop that put my d rated MT Baja Clawz on my truck a couple months ago. The e's Im talking about were Goodyears and they were failing structurally which is why they were refused for repair.
oh I believe you. It was a sh!tty tire. The dodge I mentioned above had less than 20k miles on it. It was purchased back by dodge in early 08 under lemon law citing due to afterburner problems and pcm issues that had it in the shop constantly..
I got the Toyo Open Country M/T in 315/75R16. Its a 10/E tire with a 3850# rating.
Dunlop Maxx Traction has the same specs, but IMO slightly less aggressive.
