well i had my head's magna fluxed and they are cracked from the glow plug hole to the intake valves. so i went to the junk yard and got a set, had them checked, they are cracked just like mine, so i take those back and they got me some off an 05, took them in to be checked, guess what now i have 6 heads cracked the same way! they are small cracks but, u can see them with magna flux. ford wants 2600 for a set, my motor has 30,000 miles on it, so am i going to spend all that money on heads that are going to crack right away? or did they fix this or should i slap my old ones back on and hope for the best?
I just went through 3 more sets before I found a good, "No cracks found at all" set of heads.
I tell yeah...if a company was to make a set of aluminum high performance heads for the 6.0L, they could be extremely wealthy, cuz there would be no frick'n shortage of demand...
Scrap yard otta take the heads back, and refund your money, because the heads are useless.
Then again, I heard that as long as the cracks were not into the water jackets, you shouldn't have an issue.
Were you getting coolant into the cylinders from a blown head gasket, or from a crack in the heads???
If it was from a blown head gasket, try to resurface them, and give it a shot. If it was from a crack in the heads...you need different heads.
the water was from blow head gaskets. some idiot used a scotch brite buz wheel on the block and and screwd it up.... im not going to say who the idiot was now i have to deck the block and shave the pistons, or is it better to just buy new cut pistons? i wanna make about 600 hp with this thing will the bottem end take it? what else should i do while its apart
I had my block resurfaced the first time I rebuilt it. They did it to square it up on both sides, and to make sure they were flat. They took 0.003" off one side, and 0.004" off the other. (Something like that.)
I also had the heads resurfaced...
I did not have to have the pistons cut down...you should be ok...as long as the valve seat depth is within spec's.
im pretty sure the bottom end will hold 600hp, and have you looked at places like liberator performance they got some pretty good deals on heads, like 1500 i think for there o-ringed heads.
haha ill have to ask them. i thought i was going to have to buy new heads. they told me it wasnt a big deal. i made 5 11 second passes on them last weekend and no puking at all.
well i just got off the phone with him and he said that they are stress cracks and that mine werent bad enough to worry about lol. he left them alone. i guess its not a big deal unless your leaking water
this is good group therapy for me, i just went through the whole 'have to get new heads' bull#### two months ago. Was a hard pill to swallow for the cost of the heads on top of my build cost.
Same here, got that phone call just a week ago  Still waiting to get the truck back, been a nightmare of one thing after another. First another truck was giving them trouble, heads for it came without having the casting drilled out for the push rods, then they went to do my heads and found out the box was correct, but the heads inside the box were for an 03. Get it all together and the fuel line into the passenger head was leaking and too late to get an o-ring to make it work, now they get the o-ring and road test it only to find out that the oil cooler rebuild must have been cracked cause now its leaking...
so yea its good therapy to not be the only one getting dumped on.
well im having my heads pressure tested, if they pass im puting them back in and not looking back. all my cracks are going to the intake valves, no cracks at all going to the exhaust valves. my motor only has 30,000 on it tho. im thinking maybe ceramic coating the heads around the valves might help stop cracking? am i off on that has anybody tryed that?
Are you sure they are intakes? Most of the time exhausts crack... thats where the heat is... How bad are the cracks? I would fill the exhaust ports with brake cleaner and see how fast it comes out of the cracks, if its pretty slow run it, if it pours out, find new heads, it will rob power.
Most guys with 6.0's running hot tunes and 6.4's with any tune (those thing push a lot of fuel with small tunes....) probably have cracked heads on their trucks right now. I bet you'd be hard pressed to find a 6.4 that's been running any of the bigger tunes like the 275 or 310 for any amount of time without cracks.
I called every dealer and got mine for 1004 bucks. Bought a set used first and both heads were cracked so I just bit the bullet and bought brand new
