I have a friend who is in the process of trying to reassemble a Dana 60 front end. The problem he is having is with the carrier for the ring gear. He called me this evening and asked me why the carrier was moving from side to side. I asked for more info and he explained to me that he was reinstalling his carrier and that when he installed the caps hand tight for the side bearings that the whole assembly would move from left to right freely. I asked "how much?", he said at least 1/4 inch. The only new parts are the bearing races. He checked w/two parts stores an verfied that the races for the bearings were correct. All other components are original. I am stumped and hoping that someone can help. I have not seen any of the parts first hand because helives several miles away, so Im trying to fix this over the phone. BTW its a kingpin D60.
Possible...but they rarely ever have that much thickness in the shims. The most I have ever seen is about .075-.100 in shim thickness.
He needs to make sure that the carrier is going all the way down into the bearing bores in the housing. This should be a "tight" fit as it sets the pre-load for the carrier bearings.
It can be tapped in.....but better installed with a case speader.
the bearings have not been removed. i believe that he has incorrect races. he doesnt know where the original races went, so there is nothing to compare them to.
suprhlr, I believe you are correct. After going to a Timken book he found out the same thing.
