I am sick of working on the truck every damn weekend on the road, sick of woundering if today is the day it pops again, sick of all the little crap that comes with driving a modded diesel.
Tell me what truck and why you would have for a work truck, not brand new, not old as dirt... Just something I can pull a 5th wheel every now and then, and more or less just get from the hotel/RV spot to the jobsite and back every day.
Diesel, gas, doesnt matter to me...
Not going to sell the GBB, just park her and user her as a fun/weekend/house truck
Hate to say it, but my 04 chevy 2500hd with a 6.0 gasser is quite the work truck. Except for the front end, the motor and drivetrain are bullet proof. And the aftermarket is huge for it... Not that you care. Maybe a v10 ford, I almost bought one but fell into this instead. I still think for work a gasser is hard to beat, cheap and easy to fix. But the fillups...
f 250 02-03 v-10 my dads last 3 rollbacks have been v-10s. (Mines a 7.3) but for easy maintence and still have good power and probably overall easier to work on then even the 7.3s. Cant beat it. We have sold prob. 100 of them with virtually no warranty work to speak of.
Dont get a Gasser.... get a 7.3 diesel put a intake, chip, and exhaust and call it a day. it will as you know unmodified last forever. plus you get good gas mileage and power up those hills with the 5th wheel.
Yea but you get out of $100 oil changes and you could get a v-10 with half the miles of pretty much any 7.3 your going to find for $5K less. And any repairs you might have to do on the gas motor is usually way cheaper then the 7.3
I don't disagree with an older 7.3, but it sure is nice to just get in something, start it, and drive away with no worries. Gassers are also quite a bit cheaper than diesels so you can get alittle more truck for the money. I think a v10, 6.0 chevy, or even an 8.1 would serve you well. But if price really isn't a problem a stock 7.3l would be good. I bet you even have some extra parts for it.
A stock 7.3 can't tow a 5th in my opinion. I'm Ford down to the core but the little towing that I have done with them is a joke. I bought it for hauling and mpg because I can only afford one vehicle. I'm definitely going to a gasser for my next truck.
Has anyone driven fords new v8 gasser they have. There supposed to have alot more power then the v10's had. Even with it being brand new I don't think you would have very many problems with it. Plus if you got a 4x4 you could have the solid axle.
A little V8 hooked to one of these trucks will pull it and pull it well, for now. What is it going to do 200,000 miles down the road. I am pushing 280,000 miles on mine, just started making it fast. My truck loves it.
Go 2wd if you're not going to too many bad job sites. It'll be worth it the few times you might get stuck. I wish I could have back all the money I spent lifting and lowering and buying front end parts. I'd love to have an ECSB 2wd 7.3.
I don't think you can go wrong with a stock 7.3 so long as your mindset is do a couple of things in the beginning for reliabilties sake - overhaul the stock injectors/IDM, clean or replace IPR, maybe a few other items.
However, I also would also consider a used stock 6.4. Maybe do a DPF delete if you live in a state without inspections for better mileage. I don't follow prices but my impression is now that the 6.7 has hit the market you might find a deal.
What is an ecsb?
At what point is a 7.3 modded and no longer a reliable mule. Is it injectors or big oil? Is just being chipped still in the safe zone and considered stock?
Having now owned both gas and diesel, they both have their advantages. The gas repairs seem cheaper and easier, but they drink excessively.
Member guys are little OBS injectors sucked with no chip. LOL Mine did not do bad but had to push it. Now with stage one's it will pull like a SCOLDED dog.
Thats kinda what my wife and I are thinking, a 2003-2006 Dodge crewcab, would like to have one with power windows, but plastic everything else. I would throw a set of gauges in it, exhaust and be done.
When I traded my old 2000 7.3 in about a month ago it sold within two weeks of the dealer having it. So if that doesnt show how popular the 7.3s are then I dont really know what is. The 7.3s are unbeatable for the power and reliability of them. My vote is on the 7.3
We have 115 3/4 and 1 ton pick ups and vans , I hate to admit it but that 6 liter with the allison trans is a tough sob . Not the best for fuel milage but good all around trucks . I have two friends that both have 1 tons with the 8.1 . Wicked power plant but won't pass a gas pump . So far we have had very little problems with them at all . ( They get the schit ran out of them and get overloaded on a regular basis)I'll lay money they will tow just about anything you hook to them , if you can keep the gas tank from going dry.
